The Start Of An Era

The Start Of An Era

The first #PC of our house came on a year 2000 sweaty summer evening. I knew partially some #applications from my studies, friends, neighbours and #cybercafes. But neither me nor anybody in my house had the idea of the functions and utilities of a PC as a whole. We had to depend on the recommendations of the assembler for the specifications, not that my father didn't ask anybody for advice, he asked few of his acquaintances but those mostly were failed attempts to garner information.

It was a 15 inch white #monitor with a huge back bulge due to the presence of the #picturetube. The #keyboard was white in colour with distinctly upward out #keys. A #CPU which was one and a half times the ones available today with two #floppydiscdrives one for the smaller #floppydisc and one for the larger floppy disc and one available slot for installing the #CDdrive if and when we want to. And a #mouse with a scroll wheel. It ran on #Windows98 and the #Internet was provided by our Land Phone connection.

Now the blue box at the bottom right hand side of the screen showed us the status of loading of the page. Compared to today's #Internetspeeds it would have felt like days but it was at that time magical for us.

The assembler loaded a few games, mostly demo versions. One such game that I remember is Prince Of Persia, it was a new thing hence interesting but I am not fond of games from the very beginning. The assembler also preloaded some R.D.Burman songs.

I remember after the installation the assembler and us had chai and biscuits and talk about #computers, its future and the Y2K bug as that was the year 2000.

That PC lasted nearly 7 - 8 years due to my slow journey into the PC world and also due to the fact that in those days change was slow, #software updates were fewer, #hardwares were compatible with the #softwareupdates for a longer period and last but not the least our materialistic aspirations were much contained.
