Start with the End in Mind

Start with the End in Mind

Let's first start by defining what branding is...

A company's 'brand' is much more than just its logo or name. It encompasses the overall identity and image that a business projects to the world. This includes:

  1. Visual Identity: Logos, color schemes, typography, and design elements.
  2. Voice and Tone: The style of communication, whether it’s formal, friendly, humorous, etc.
  3. Customer Experience: How customers perceive their interactions with the company, from customer service to the quality of the products or services.
  4. Reputation: The public perception and credibility of the company in the market.
  5. Emotional Connection: The feelings and associations that customers have with the company.

In essence, a brand is the sum of how a business presents itself and how it is perceived by its customers and the public. It’s about creating a consistent and memorable identity that resonates with your target audience.

Before diving into establishing or refining your brand, think about the end goal. What do you want to achieve with your brand? How do you want people to think about your organization? How do you want people to feel about you, your team, and your organization?

"Vision is a destination - a fixed point to which we focus all effort. Strategy is a route - an adaptable path to get us where we want to go." –Simon Sinek

As Simon so eloquently stated, vision (aka your brand) is your destination, while strategy is the path in which you get there.

Now, why is branding so important? According to Redblink.com, companies with consistent branding across all channels see a 23% revenue increase. For small businesses, this consistency can be a game-changer, especially considering that about 50% of small businesses fail within the first five years. (source: Commerce Institute)

And here’s another fun fact from ThinkBrandedMedia: Effective use of color in your branding can raise awareness and evoke feelings even before customers buy from you.

So, whether you're growing your small business or just starting out, a solid branding strategy is key. If your customers can’t identify you, they can’t interact with you.
