Ugadi or Yugadi is the New Year's Day celebrated by people in the states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharastra (building of Gudi popularized by Shivaji Maharaja) and Goa in India. It is also known as Samvatsarādi, which means "the beginning of a new year." It can also mean beginning of a new millenium. The first day of Chaitra month as per the Hindu Calendar is celebrated as?Gudi Padwa ?in India it also marks the beginning of spring. The festival is also known as the harvest festival as it marks the end of one season and start of the other season of cropping.
Ugadi falls on the first day of Chaitra month, which usually falls in March or April according to the Gregorian calendar. The festival is celebrated with much enthusiasm and joy, and it marks the beginning of a new agricultural cycle.
On this day, people wake up early, take a ritual bath, wear new clothes, and decorate their homes with rangolis (traditional patterns made with colored powder or rice flour). They also offer prayers to their deities and perform special puja rituals.
A special dish called "Ugadi Pachadi" is prepared and shared among family and friends. It is a mixture of six tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, and astringent, which symbolizes the different experiences of life. Ugadi?pachadi is made of neem flowers, raw mango, jaggery, pepper powder, coconut and salt. There are slight variations of making this. Each ingredient has a special emotion associated: neem buds/ flowers (sadness), jaggery (happiness), green chilli (anger), salt (fear), tamarind (disgust) and unripened mango (surprise)
Overall, Ugadi is a time of new beginnings, optimism, and hope for a prosperous and successful year ahead.
