Starehe & Beyond: 30 Years After the Charge
2024 marks 30 years since we, the Form 4 leavers at Starehe Boys Centre and School, gathered to hear the charge from the late Dr. G.W. Griffin, co-Founder of Starehe. His powerful voice, reading the charge, still resonates with every Starehe boy, no matter where they are in the world. Reflecting on those words, I replay them here:
“I charge you never to forget the great benefits you have received in this place and, in time, to do all you can to enable others to enjoy the same advantage. Remember that you carry with you, wherever you go, the good name of Starehe. May God Almighty bless you in your ways and keep you in the knowledge of His love, now and forever.”
With these words, over two hundred of us, class of 1994, graduated, stepping into the world with the responsibility, like many others before and after us, to carry forward the legacy of Starehe – a school born out of the vision to offer comfort (‘Starehe’) to boys from disadvantaged backgrounds. The founders, in the early years, even rescued boys from the streets, restored their dignity, and helped them become leaders in their communities.
Having joined Starehe nearly 35 years ago and graduated in 1994, I now reflect on the invaluable lessons and gifts this institution has provided. These lessons have shaped not just my life, but the lives of thousands of Starehe “brothers” around the world. In the spirit of gratitude, I’m sharing a few reflections:
1. Resilience in adversity
At Starehe, we came from diverse and often challenging backgrounds. For many, it was a place of refuge, a sanctuary far better than their homes. We learned to be resilient in the face of adversity—whether in academics, personal struggles, or life itself. This lesson continues to resonate with me today, teaching me to understand rather than judge the challenges others face.
2. The Power of community
Starehe’s inclusive spirit meant building strong, supportive relationships. I learned the importance of teamwork, collaboration, and mutual support in achieving common goals. This lesson has been central to my success in leading diverse teams in various professional settings.
3. Self-Discipline and responsibility
Starehe taught us the importance of self-discipline. Success was tied to our ability to take responsibility for our actions and stay focused on long-term goals. This mindset has served me well, helping me remain committed and disciplined in both personal and professional life.
4. The Importance of giving back
Starehe instilled in us a deep sense of responsibility to give back. Whether through mentorship, charity, or simply helping those in need, Dr. Griffin’s charge to lift others as we rise remains a guiding principle in my life.
5. A Strong work ethic
Starehe emphasized excellence in everything. We were taught that hard work and dedication are essential for success. “If you are given a cup of coffee to wash, wash it better than it has ever been washed,” Dr. Griffin would say. This ethos continues to drive me in my work, striving for excellence in every task, big or small.

6. The Value of education
Starehe’s mission of providing opportunities through education was life-changing. It opened doors for countless boys from disadvantaged backgrounds, transforming them into respected doctors, engineers, architects, and leaders in their fields. Education truly is the key to empowerment and opportunity.
7. Courage to dream big
Despite coming from humble beginnings, Starehe encouraged us to dream big. The environment fostered ambition and the belief that we could achieve anything if we set our minds to it. This lesson has been essential in my journey, inspiring me to set bold goals and strive for them, regardless of the obstacles.
8. Leadership and accountability
Starehe’s focus on developing leaders taught me the value of integrity, responsibility, and leading by example. As I’ve taken on leadership roles in my career and personal life, these lessons continue to guide me in making decisions that impact others and holding myself accountable for my actions.
9. Gratitude and Humility
Starehe taught us to be grateful for the opportunities we had and to remain humble, no matter our achievements. This principle keeps me grounded, reminding me of where I came from and the importance of staying humble in success.
10. Civic responsibility and national Pride
At Starehe, we were encouraged to understand our role in shaping the future of our country. Whether through small acts of leadership or contributions to our communities, we learned that each of us has a responsibility to create positive change. These lessons have stayed with me, and I continue to practice them, whether it is from small roles in my direct neighbourhood or being an active citizen in my community.
These are just a few of the many lessons I carry with me from my time at Starehe. I pray that Starehe continues to thrive and that those of us who have benefited from its teachings continue to live out these principles. By doing so, we can contribute to the creation of a stronger society and nation—one person at a time.
To Starehe Class of 1994, we are here, we are Grateful! Happy and prosperous 2025 and beyond!
