Star Wars Releases in 2022 for TV, Games, and Books

Star Wars? ?fans, do you recall a time when we?weren’t?inundated with stories from a galaxy far, far away? Well, besides the decades passing between the film trilogies? We live in a golden age of media, with a plethora of TV shows and films at our fingertips thanks to streaming, books, and video games. With Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm came a flood of new?Star Wars?tales and characters brought to life on the big and small screens.

Since we can’t go a year without something new from the?Star Wars?universe, I thought I’d compile a list of what to expect this year, from highly anticipated Disney Plus shows to video games and thrilling novels. Especially now that?Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett? has concluded, you might be feeling a Wookiee?-sized hole in your galaxy. Take a look at TV, then video games, and finally some reading material, and may the Force be with you.

Obi-Wan Kenobi

He’s back, baby! Ewan McGregor reprises one of his most famous roles as?Obi-Wan Kenobi? ?in his eponymous limited original series,?Obi-Wan Kenobi?. The show takes place a decade after the dramatic events of?Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, wherein Obi-Wan suffered his most significant defeat during his showdown with?Anakin Skywalker? . Their battle on Mustafar? saw the end of a close relationship as well as Anakin’s venture to the dark side of the Force as Sith Lord?Darth Vader? .

We don’t know much about the series besides the vague premise, plus Hayden Christensen’s return as Vader. Kumail Nanjiani and Maya Erskine join an expansive supporting cast, with Deborah Chow helming all six episodes and Joby Harold penning the episodic scripts.

Bring it on! I’m ready for more adventures with Obi-Wan in a galaxy far, far away. You can stream?Obi-Wan Kenobi?on Wednesday, May 25 (the 45th anniversary of?Star Wars: A New Hope?) on Disney+.?

Andor

Diego Luna returns to the?Star Wars?scene as the titular rebel spy amid the formative first years of the Rebellion.?Andor? follows Cassian Andor? five years before what transpires in?Rogue One. Created by Tony Gilroy with Toby Haynes, Ben Caron, and Susanna White signed on as directors, this prequel series also stars Adria Arjona, Stellan Skarsg?rd, and Fiona Shaw.

Like?Obi-Wan Kenobi, Disney remains tight-lipped regarding pertinent plot details. That said, I’m excited to see Luna reprise his role as Cassian Andor and get more of his backstory before the tragic outcome of?Rogue One.?Andor?boasts a 12-episode first season with the second season in development. It’s slated for a premiere sometime this year.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch

Star Wars: The Bad Batch? blessed us with a consistently great first season last year, expanding the rich?Star Wars?lore in exciting ways. The show centers on the Bad Batch?, a group of experimental?clone troopers ?experiencing trials aplenty in the aftermath of the Clone Wars?. Fun fact: They’re all voiced by the maddeningly talented Dee Bradley Baker.

IMDb and the rest of the internet purport that season 2 is coming this year, but there’s no specific release date yet. I need season 2, especially after that explosive finale. Gimme, gimme, please!

The Mandalorian?

The Mandalorian? became a boon for Disney+ in its early days as a streaming platform. Even though the series will be three years old in November of this year,?The Mandalorian?is still one of its most popular shows. Pedro Pascal stars as the titular Mandalorian?, AKA?Din Djarin? , a bounty hunter wending his way through the galaxy after the fall of the Empire, before the rise of the First Order.?

Season 2 left off with Mando bidding farewell to?Grogu? , as?Luke Skywalker? ?took the Child away for intense Jedi? training.?Nobody?drives a wedge between a father and his tiny frog-eating son, even if his name is Luke Skywalker.?While?The Book of Boba Fett ?might impact the third season’s trajectory (I won’t spoil anything here), I’m sure we can expect all of the Western-themed gunslinging and?Star Wars?sci-fi goodness we’ve loved over the years.

Season 3 of?The Mandalorian?will presumably premiere later this year.?

LEGO? Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

Star Wars: Hunters

Star Wars’?expansive universe brings about a host of new characters and new stories in Zynga’s?Star Wars: Hunters?. This video game takes place after the Galactic Empire’s fall and features rebellion heroes, bounty hunters, a Wookiee warrior, a female dark side Force user, and?stormtroopers? . If you dig competitive, adrenaline-pumping combat games, then you’ll surely love?Hunters.?

Hunters?also connects players in real-time, bringing them together to fight in settings inspired by?notable?Star Wars?locations.?You’ll find this game on Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android. Brace yourselves for a Force-ful battle when?Star Wars: Hunters?releases sometime this year.

Star Wars: Shadow of the Sith?

Adam Christopher’s adult novel?Star Wars: Shadow of the Sith??hones in on?Luke Skywalker ?and?Lando Calrissian? ?along with the pervasive threat of the Sith Eternal?. Set between?Star Wars: Return of the Jedi??and?Star Wars: The Force Awakens?, the book follows Luke as he’s plagued with visions of the dark side and a Force disturbance traced to a dead planet called Exegol?.

Lando approaches Luke with news of an emerging Sith player in the galaxy, confirming Luke’s fears. Along the way, we meet Ochi of Bestoon? — a Sith assassin tasked with kidnapping a young?Rey? , the granddaughter of?Darth Sidious? .

Shadow of the Sith?appears to fill in our knowledge gaps regarding Rey’s past, and hopefully it does a better job of dictating Rey’s origins than?Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker??(ohhh, shots fired!).?

Expect?Star Wars: Shadow of the Sith?on bookshelves on June 28.?

Star Wars: Brotherhood?

Star Wars: Brotherhood? by Mike Chen shines a light on Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi during the Clone Wars. Amid a wartorn galaxy rife with bad blood and tangled alliances, The Jedi Order? dispatches Obi-Wan to investigate an explosion that rocks Cato Neimoidia?, the apple of the Trade Federation’s eye, to its core. Meanwhile, Anakin is promoted to Jedi Knight? and insists on joining his former master as they unravel the mystery together.

Brotherhood?explores the new relationship between a former master and Padawan? as they learn to stand on equal ground together. I’m a sucker for intricate character development and relationship exploration, so this is right up my alley.

Immerse yourself in the Clone Wars when?Star Wars: Brotherhood?releases on May 10.

Star Wars: Stories of Jedi and Sith?

If you’ve got a middle-grader?Star Wars?fan, then give them the gift of?Star Wars: Stories of Jedi and Sith?. This canon middle-grade, short-story anthology explores some of the galaxy’s most fearsome and heroic characters, from Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader to Obi-Wan Kenobi and?Asajj Ventress? . Other?Star Wars?characters getting their time in the sun are Rey,?Emperor Palpatine? ,?Darth Maul? ,?Yoda? , Barriss Offee?, and Qui-Gon Jinn?.?

There’s nothing better than an enthralling good versus evil tale, and the?Star Wars?saga overflows with them. Be sure to visit your local bookstore when?Star Wars: Stories of Jedi and Sith?arrives on June 7.?

Star Wars: Padawan?

YA lovers,?Star Wars: Padawan? has your name all over it. Written by Kiersten White,?Padawan?illustrates young Obi-Wan Kenobi’s struggles as a Padawan under Qui-Gon Jinn’s tutelage in an exciting coming-of-age tale. Obi-Wan feels more than a twinge of jealousy when his buddies get bona fide Jedi mission experience while he’s still on Coruscant?, meditating and practicing his forms.

To top it all off, Qui-Gon Jinn, his master, seems more distracted than ever, from attempting to connect with the Force to incessantly arguing with the Jedi Council?. Obi-Wan finally gets his wish when he accompanies Qui-Gon on a mission to a distant world once inhabited by ancient Jedi.

I love me a good coming-of-age story, and the?Star Wars?setting increases that love tenfold. I haven’t even read?Padawan?yet, but I’ve no doubt it’s still a better love story than?Twilight, even if there’s zero romance.

Get ready for the mission of a lifetime when?Star Wars: Padawan?hits bookshelves on July 26.
