Stanford uses AI to navigate health information sharing with teens and their families

Stanford Medicine Children's Health is spearheading an innovative solution that's causing ripples in the healthcare industry.

They're using artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing (NLP) improve adolescent care.

By striking this balance, we can improve patient outcomes, build trust and set a new standard in patient-centered care.- Dr. Natalie Pageler, chief health information officer and division chief, clinical informatics, at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health

Traditional patient portals have been walking a tightrope. On one side, there's the need to respect teenagers' privacy rights. On the other side, there’s the challenge of appropriately involving their guardians in their healthcare. It's a delicate balancing act. And one small misstep could lead to a failure that breaks the trust between a teen and their clinician or even have legal repercussions.

Stanford’s solution? An effective dual-monitoring system. This system uses AI and NLP to delicately thread the needle, recognizing the delicate balance between privacy and involvement.

During the initial analysis, they noted ore than 50% of our teen portal accounts were being inappropriately accessed by guardians and more than 20% of clinician notes contained inappropriate confidential content. They now were able to create systems, guardrails, and templates to improve.

This is promising for many realms of healthcare!
