This is Standing for Something

Over the last 2 years, Covid has drawn a decisive line between many people.

During this pandemic, we’ve seen a number of?individuals essentially “stand up and be counted” across all different sectors of the economy - be it hospitality, events, travel, etc. a number of leaders have been able to create meaningful causes which others have supported.?

In business, when the pandemic hit we saw a spotlight on how people handled the fallout from the pandemic. The way business leaders handled their staff became even more under the microscope with furlough, redundancies, and working from home becoming the topic of?conversations.?

This still hasn’t changed - in a recruitment market where there are massive skills gaps in areas like Tech, Digital, and Services, employees now have significantly more sway in negotiations for roles.

In the last 8 years, I’ve run a company that has?employed over 800 people and have personally been involved in the recruitment process of 150 of these individuals from grad to senior management. The feedback we got constantly was, I love that you and the businesses do things differently, that you genuinely appear to care for the staff, and have an inspiring mission and purpose. In summary, we stood for something greater than just a 9-5 job.

This helped us attract clients, hirers, partners, and investors. Also over the last 2 years, a play called “Hamilton” has exploded into the headlines. Alexander Hamilton the play's protagonist famously quotes “If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.” This has really rung true with the businesses we’ve been looking to invest in.?

A number of the founders are genuinely looking to make a meaningful impact on society, be this in sustainability, health, or wellness. Founders these days are driven not just by financial success, they are focused on having a big impact on the world, which they believe will then create personal value.?

Digital and Social Media have made us infinitely more global and connected to each other, this has led us to become more opinionated. Our future businesses are led by digital natives who have grown up in a connected, conscious world. The future businesses will create value in the?area which people care about.

The future for people and for businesses is to stand for something, stand for something bigger than just yourself.?

Some of the things I am personally standing for:

  • Significance of Sobriety
  • Office-first Working
  • Honesty and Integrity
  • Putting Others First
  • Protecting Men's Mental Health

Love this, Dominic McGregor! Changing the way people are seen and heard at work is so crucial to their well being, and to business success. Those who focus on the bottom line are missing their people leaving (mentally or physically) - whereas those with a focus on their employees don't need to worry about the bottom line! Everyone deserves to flourish at work!

Echo everything you've said here Dominic with the exception of Office first working. I don't dispute there are benefits to being in the office in terms of helping with collaboration and how that can contribute to developing the culture of an organisation, however, as a successful leader you can equally drive the same spirit 'without' the need for 'presenteeism' it just takes a bit of effort and coordination. Insisting people are in the office is the wrong approach in my opinion. The ability to work flexibly in today's environment should be welcomed, to accommodate people's different living circumstances and align to each individuals preferences. I like going to the office and I value it more precisely because, I'm not, and don't need to be, there every day.

Thank you for sharing this Dominic. Standing up for truth and justice in the world, and mental health of all people, are some of the biggest things on my heart since I was saved by the Grace of God in 2019. Have you ever wondered why the message of truth that “Jesus loves you and died for you on the cross” isn’t seen on mainstream news, on billboards, on government briefings? Praise God for choosing you and everyone reading to be free, we are chosen and not forsaken! God bless you and your family Dominic ????
