Standing in solidarity with the Muslim community during Ramadan

This week marks the first day of the holy month of Ramadan. It is a month of prayers, reflection, and religious celebration, but also a time of community and coming together – often through breaking the daily fast at Iftar meals of an evening. Ramadan Mubarak to those of you marking this holy month.??
This year, Ramadan is taking place as the siege of Gaza enters its sixth month. Over one million people – the majority of whom are Muslim – are running out of food, water and medical supplies, crammed into the last remaining safe zone in Rafah.?
Many Islamic councils and peak bodies have called for the cancellation of large scale Iftar events, instead encouraging those funds to be directed to providing humanitarian aid in support of Gaza. SSI has stood in solidarity with this decision in cancelling our own annual Iftar event, acknowledging that many members of the Muslim community are in mourning.?
Many organisations are working to support people fleeing the crisis. If you want to donate to organisations providing aid on the ground in Gaza, you can donate to the Médecins Sans Frontières , International Committee of the Red Cross , or the World Health Organisation , which all have Occupied Palestinian Territories appeals. To support organisations assisting those who have evacuated to Australia, donate to the Palestinian Christians in Australia accommodation drive or the Al-Ihsan Foundation . Alternatively, SSI’s fundraiser is also still open and you can donate here. ?
For those of you marking Ramadan in Australia, you have my heartfelt wishes for a peaceful month of reflection, community and time with friends, family and loved ones.?

8 个月It's important not to view the suffering caused by Israeli occupation and ethnic cleansing as if it were a natural disaster. The situation in Gaza, where Palestinians are being starved to death is a war crime supported by some western governments.

8 个月Let's replace the event with a vigil? I'd be keen to support that.

8 个月Sincerely appreciate your acknowledgment of our pain and sorrow for a siege that’s not too hard to stop and do hope and pray that this horrendous atrocities killing of innocent women men and children stops so Palestinians can regain their dignity and respect for humanity. You’re so right this Ramadan is certainly like no other we’ve experience before and while we begin this month of fasting and discipline, we will continue to pray for Justice and peace where equality and equal access to life and living is never to be hijacked by any group and Palestinians will regain their lives with justice and peace.
