Standing On The Shoulders Of Those Who Came Before...
I shared this picture of my daughter's graduation from high school. We were all emotional but my husband, Buff Parham added the context behind it. Here are his words:
"OK, I'm a little bit embarrassed by this pic, but not really. Doesn't every parent get a little worked up at the graduation of their kids? It's an incredible mix of joy, pride, nostalgia and awe. A major rite of passage. But in this case, it goes a little further. My daughter Casey Parham is named for her grandfather, my late father, Casey Parham. That Casey was a son of the Mississippi Delta, who had to leave school after the 7th grade to work his father's cotton crop. Later he was chased out of the state by the KKK. During World War II, he welded in the shipyards of LA without a mask because Black welders didn't get masks. He eventually built his own trucking business and helped raise two very lucky adopted kids, of which I was one. He preached the importance of formal education to me because he didn't have one himself. He was beyond proud to see his son admitted to Stanford University and somewhere I know that he feels the same way about this young woman that carries his name. So on Father's Day, I caught myself crying for not one, but two people named Casey Parham. Onward and upward!"

9 年Congrats again to Casey!! Oh Rene… this is so, so moving and inspiring and awesome. I never saw this before - What a proud moment! Thank God for the strength, determination and courage of heroes like Casey's grandfather. And now I love your hubby even more! (I didn't realize he was adopted-me too). Casey is just so gorgeous and grown up -I can't believe it-I remember her as a toddler! I can't tell you how much I have loved reconnecting and watching your life unfold and kids grow and all you are accomplishing. Thanks for forging a trail! XOXO
