A Standing Ovation for Kevin Otiende: Our Collective Bodyguard Using his Influence to Protect amp; Safeguard Kenyans

The news resonated throughout Kenya this weekend: Kevin Otiende, a renowned PR circles figure, has been deservedly recognized as one of the nation's TOP 50 Most Influential CEOs. This prestigious award not only celebrates his professional achievements but also shines a light on his brilliant commitment to social responsibility, particularly towards the most vulnerable members of our society at the point of their greatest need.

Kevin Otiende’s journey transcends the realm of strategic communication and media relations. He has consistently demonstrated that influence is not merely a tool for success, but a powerful catalyst for positive societal change. His unwavering dedication to the cause of the disadvantaged, the poor, the needy, and the desperate comes from an inner space and personal experiences and has pivoted his childhood experiences to become a be the defining characteristic bedrock of his leadership.

Sample this: “Yesterday afternoon I went to interact with a very unique problem that requires an urgent solution. Muthurwa Primary has about 900 children. Over 90% of them come from the Muthurwa area and Majengo Slums. Almost half of them come from places where they have to pay Ksh 10 to take a bath. This money is a lot for their parents, so for weeks, these kids go to school having not had the privilege of showering. Thankfully, the school has many bathrooms for both boys and girls. My plan is to convert 10 of them - 5 for boys and 5 for girls into well-equipped shower rooms. This means that the kids will be getting to school early, shower as they go to class. If you’d like to be part of transforming these kids lives by something as simple as a shower please join me in raising Ksh 1 million. Send me a message we plan.”

Within minutes he had over 900 likes and 75 comments with many across the globe offering to support. I have no doubt the target was met.

It is this ability to marshal support from almost anyone using similar countless initiatives, he has championed the well-being of those often overlooked, downtrodden and marginalized either by geography or by the sheer incompetence of the necessary agencies. In one story he recounts how he wanted as a child to be a presidential bodyguard- a career his mother quickly put to rest when she told him he had neither the health (he had asthma) and stealth (he couldn't run much) needed for the position.

?

Fast forward to date and he is actually in some ways more than a presidential bodyguard. By protecting the interests of Kenyans in many spheres, he is our collective bodyguard.

?

In one case he cajoles KPLC for not fixing an electricity transformer in his rural home area. In another he tried to save a man who was spending nights in a Nairobi tunnel. The list is winding, and dazzling even.

His efforts have extended a helping hand to school-going children struggling with crippling financial barriers, ensuring they receive the education they deserve. This commitment exemplifies his belief that investing in the future generation is an investment in the future of Kenya.

?

His influence extends beyond individual acts of kindness. He has consistently advocated for the instrumental role the middle class can play in driving societal change. By actively engaging in discourse, promoting awareness, and advocating for policy reform, Kevin Otiende has empowered others to become agents of positive transformation. The illegal and rampant vertical growth of Kileleshwa apartments that has no respect for existing structures and the living quality of life of many is a case in point.

His remarkable dedication to social responsibility resonates deeply with the Kenyan spirit of harambee, a philosophy of communal effort and collective responsibility. He embodies the essence of this principle, inspiring others to harness their influence and resources for the betterment of the nation. Infact on this score he can be almost be compared to another leader who is on the forefront of caring and empathy for deserving cases- #MikeSonko.

Kevin Otiende’s recognition as a TOP 50 Most Influential CEO is therefore not merely an individual accolade. It is a proof of the power of empathy, compassion, and unwavering dedication in shaping a more equitable and prosperous Kenya. His story serves as a lighthouse of hope, urging us all to leverage our individual strengths and influence to create a positive ripple effect in our communities no matter our societal position.

In a world fully consumed by self-interest, self-aggrandizement and egomaniac theatrics, Kevin Otiende is a powerful reminder that true leadership is hidden in service to community, advocacy for the proper way of living, and the unwavering pursuit of a better tomorrow for all- not just the accumulation of money and riches for individual aggrandizement. His journey serves as an inspiration to us all, urging us to embrace our responsibility to uplift the vulnerable, advocate for change, and work collectively to build a brighter future for Kenya.
