It’s all going to shit…. Is it really? How do you know?
Establishing quality standards is crucial in both personal and professional life. They provide clarity, consistency, and a sense of purpose. For business leaders and managers, they ensure smooth operations and long-term growth. For individuals, they guide daily choices and personal development. This article explores why defining these standards is essential for success.
Defining Quality Standards
Success starts with a clear definition of what a “good day” looks like for you and your organisation. Without this, progress is a guess.
A great example of this: I happened to find this morning, while reviewing my old paper files (Yes, I still keep them—they have been all over the world with me), the front page of the Dowdales High School Handbook. My mum, the great Liz Moffatt, led the school successfully for over 20 years, and the opening line captured their standard beautifully:
“Dowdales School is a successful school for all its pupils. Staff and pupils are happy here. All our efforts must aim to maintain the truth of those two statements and more than that, we must continually strive to raise standards and increase success for everyone involved in the school.”
Max De Pree, in Leadership is an Art, emphasised:
“We are dedicated to quality. Quality is a matter of truth. When we talk about quality, we are talking about quality of product and service. But we are also talking about the quality of our relationships and the quality of our communications and the quality of our promises to one another. And so, it is reasonable to think about quality in terms of truth and integrity.”
This quote highlights that quality isn’t just about what you produce—it’s about how you communicate, treat others, and stay true to your commitments.
Why Quality Standards Matter
Quality standards impact daily operations by providing clear expectations for every task, improving efficiency, and fostering a sense of accountability among team members. For business leaders and managers, they serve as a blueprint for decision-making, performance management, and customer service excellence. In the long term, consistently upheld standards build a reputation for reliability, trust, and excellence, attracting customers and top talent while ensuring sustained growth and success.
Personal Reflection: Maintaining high standards when running a Growth Agency meant sometimes turning down deals. We focused on two key questions: Will this help their business grow faster? and Is this the right thing, at the right time, in the right way? If we couldn’t confidently say yes, we reconsidered our solution or directed clients elsewhere. This commitment to quality wasn’t always easy, but it ensured we delivered real value and built lasting trust.
Creating Your Quality Standards

Tip: Start by writing one sentence that defines quality for your business. Refine it over time, and share it often.

Upholding Standards: The Hard Choices
Maintaining quality standards means making tough decisions. One of the hardest is removing people who don’t uphold these standards—even if they achieve high performance in other areas. When you allow exceptions, you send a message that their behaviour is acceptable, effectively making it the new standard.
Why This Matters:
Action Steps:
Leader’s Insight: I’ve faced situations where letting go of a high-performing team member was necessary because they compromised the team’s culture. While difficult, it strengthened the team’s trust and long-term performance, I have also seen what happens when you don’t.
Who can relate to that?
Final Thought
Quality standards are more than policies—they are commitments to truth, integrity, and excellence. Reflect on your own standards today. Are they clear? Are they communicated? Are they upheld?

1 个月Hi Tom: It's not often that there is a direct correlation between the written word and the corresponding actions but in your mother's case she walked the talk daily. Clearly you are continuing to carry the torch for integrity driven leadership. It is good to hear from you. Alex
