STANDARDIZATION FOR TRAFFIC SIGNALS

Working with independent citizen traffic safety researcher & activist Christian Sweryda, we have learned of problems where traffic control & safety devices are inconsistent across Winnipeg.
The attached image shows four different similar intersections with four completely different arrangements of traffic lights. It appears that this issue has led to inefficient use of resources over the years and on an ongoing basis, with ad hoc changed to traffic control infrastructure taking place repeatedly over the years.
This week, I moved a motion with my colleagues at Riel Community Committee asking the public service to report back with proper standards to ensure responsible use of tax dollars and the highest standard of safety available under national guidelines.
Thank you to Chris who I have collaborated before with on numerous issues from crosswalks, to school and playground signage, yellow light times and other traffic safety & fairness reforms.
Thank you also to Markus Chambers City Councillor St. Norbert - Seine River whose feedback led to an amendment to my motion to approach the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to discuss national municipal standards for traffic signals.
