Standardization a story of mediocrity.

Standardization a story of mediocrity.

What is success? i feel success is about, how happy you are. Society has defined success as someone with a big house, nice car ,good bank balance and a good job .

Society over the years has built structures which has forced to lead a life which we have little control upon. We think we have freedom to choose but what we actually do is pick not choose from the option what already been chosen for you. If you think hard standardization approach is the crux of the problem.

We think we have freedom to choose but what we actually do is pick not choose from the option what already been chosen for you.

Institutions and scholars who earnestly trumpet a standard formula imply that if you know your destination, work hard, and stay the course, fulfillment will be bestowed upon you once you reach your destination. Earn your diplomas and land a good job, and happiness will ensue somehow. The age of standardization has enforced the dictum that if you strive for excellence you will obtain fulfillment. But on the contrary if you do what you are good at, then you will be successful and importantly a fulfilling life.

Admiring the astonishing successful standardization of the business world, education reformers were inspired to redesign schools and the classroom experience around the same guiding principal of ruthless efficiency. In the early twentieth century, the entire American educational system was transformed through standardized grades, standardized tests, standardized semesters, and standardized diplomas.

Class room were redesigned to emulate factories all the way down to school bells. Our school are, in a sense, factories in which the raw products are to be shaped and fashioned in to products to meet the various demand of life.

First we standardized work, then we standardized learning then we integrated our standardized workplace with our standardized education system, establishing standardized career. And once the full passage of our experience was standardized from our first day of kindergarten until the morning of our retirement it marked the complete standardization of human life.

Father of standardization Fedrick Taylor argued standardization was necessary because people were cheaper and easier to rearrange than machine but century later machine are cheaper and easier to rearrange than people. But over the years we all came to accept this dehumanizing system so whole heartedly, is because society made an implicit promise to its citizen, in the age of standardization if you can follow the straight path to its destination you will be granted employment, social status and financial security. This promise got so ingrained it is assumed a form of social contract.

The standardized system does not help us to realize what we are good at. Our institution are not interested in the messy details of your personal desires. Our school and jobs were never designed to help you figure out our appetite, such information is irrelevant under the standardization covenant. The motivation concerns of institute are impersonal and procedural, they want to motivate as many individuals as possible to attain standardization excellence with the least effort and cost.

It should not come as surprise then that system for producing excellence-including almost every modern school, university and employee training program establishes and enforces standardized time. They administer fixed pace periods of training with predetermined start and end dates, such as semester, trimesters, academic year and fiscal year.

Most undergraduate requires four years to get a bachelor degree , whether you are majoring art , marine biology, mandarin, indifferent to whether you are attending university or private liberal art college, whether you are taught by Nobel prize winning professional or teaching assistant, whether you learn faster or slow does not matter. No matter how skillful or experienced you might be. We are made to believe that getting good is just a matter of time.

We are made to believe that getting good is just a matter of time.

Standardized time is solely for the benefit of the institution, not for you. Compelling everyone to conform to the same timelines makes it easier for administrations to manage educational processes by setting fixed dates for admission enrollment , course times, final exams, and graduations,. By compelling all candidates to march along the same track at the same pace, more bluntly by compelling you to conform your personal educational experience to the administrations workaday routines, institutions can more conveniently manage budgets and allocate personal .

Standardization is lethal it tries to take away individuality, as understanding of your individuality increases, you will make choices that fit you better and better, your life will become more fulfilling, and you will steadily ascend toward excellence. According to the standardization mindset, only a small minority of people are capable of attaining excellence. Our institution should help find and develop his/her potential to the fullest and this is only possible through personlization of education. In economics terms Standardization has only lead massive under utilization of the resources.

I was trying to figure out what is the take away for me - is it happiness, is it excellence, is it systemic issues (eg standardisation) or education system? Some thoughts to ponder… Each one has its own complexity, advantages and disadvantages. So simply saying standardisation has led to under utilisation or reducing excellence may not be correct. One may refer Ikigai, hedgehog concept for understanding and achieving happiness, excellence etc. Standardisation helps in scaling, bringing everybody to a definded level of performance, whereas innovation (organised chaos) helps one to improve the level of standardisation itself!
