Standard Spotlight: CAN/ULC-S710.1:2019

Bead-type foam sealants are used by homeowners and professionals to seal holes, gaps, and crevices around the home where air leakage could occur. You can often find this material that looks like solidified shaving cream filling gaps behind baseboards, window and door frames, wire and pipe penetrations, air vents, or around the sides of electrical boxes.

The Third Edition of CAN/ULC-S710.1, Standard for Bead-Applied One Component Polyurethane Air Sealant Foam, Part 1: Material Specification, was published on June 26, 2019.

This Edition of the Standard was developed by the ULC Standards Task Group on Polyurethane Foam Thermal Insulation and Sealant Systems, and formally approved by the ULC Standard Committee on Thermal Performance and Energy Use in the Built Environment (S700).

This New Edition includes the following changes:

  • Removal of “Thermal Insulation” from the title to clarify that the material covered by this standard is for air sealants;
  • Revisions to the Scope to clarify that this standard does not address the requirements for the materials to be used as thermal insulation;
  • Updates to the reference publications;
  • Elimination of the classification based on flame spread rating as the classification is not referenced in the National Building Code and had no impact on Canadian codes; flame spread index under 500 is the critical factor and that continues to be a requirement; and
  • Addition of a new Annex B to provide clarification on sample panel preparation; different spray polyurethane foam formulations may expand and react at different rates; the new annex gives guidance on how to apply the foam in a manner to obtain consistent specimens for physical property testing.

This standard is referenced in the National Building Code of Canada.
