This Standard applies to hand fuelled, solid fuel fired space heaters of the radiant, convection or forced circulating air type intended for residential heating.

Prior to the processing of the Fourth Edition, a Revision to the Third Edition was published during August, 2020, to address appliances that do not incorporate a catalytic combustor by-pass, so as to respond to an urgent stakeholder need, on a more rapid timeline than is typically provided by the work on a comprehensive new edition of a standard
A key in standards development is having a true consensus of people working together, not only to create new standards, but also to revise current standards to address the ever changing safety risks of the world. This was showcased in the development and publication of CAN/ULC-S627.
The ULC Standards Technical Committee for Factory-Built Fireplaces, Chimneys and Vents (S600E) consists of people from various interest groups, such as Producers, AHJs, General Interest, Supply Chain, and Testing Organizations.
