Standard Spotlight: CAN/ULC-S504-12-REV1

The First Revision of the Third Edition of CAN/ULC-S504, Standard for Dry Chemical Fire Extinguishers, was published on March 24, 2021. This bi-national standard was revised jointly with the Eleventh Edition of ANSI/UL 299.

This Revision of the Standard was developed and formally approved by the ULC Technical Committee on Portable Fire Extinguishers (S500A), in conjunction with the UL Standards Technical Panel on Portable Fire Extinguishers (STP 605).

This Revision includes updates to the Nameplate Abrasion Test, in Clauses 62.2 and 62.3, to address restrictive test parameters that called out old system/scales no longer utilized/referenced by industry, and to clarify the test procedure by adding procedure details and information on the common grit/size to allow for more clear and concise testing regardless of who is reading the standard.

This Standard is referenced in the National Fire Code of Canada.
