Standard Spotlight: ANSI/CAN/UL/ULC 33:2021

The Ninth Edition of ANSI/CAN/UL/ULC 33, Standard for Heat Responsive Links for Fire-Protection Service, was published on June 21, 2021. This bi-national standard was developed to incorporate requirements from ULC-S505, Fusible Links for Fire-Protection Service. ULC-S505 has been superseded by the publication of ANSI/CAN/UL/ULC 33. ULC-S505 is referenced in the National Building Code of Canada.

This Standard was developed and formally approved by the UL Standards Technical Panel on Sprinkler Equipment for Fire Protection (STP 199).?

ANSI/CAN/UL/ULC 33 was developed to ensure it met stakeholder and industry needs in the USA and Canada. UL 33 was an ANSI Accredited standard that was regularly revised and changed to ensure that the requirements in the standard are accurate and reflect the latest needs and concerns of industry and stakeholders. It also was the corresponding UL Standard to ULC-S505. ULC-S505 was the only standard under the portfolio of the ULC Standards Committee on Fire Protection Equipment and Systems (S500B) that is referenced in a Canadian National Model Code (National Building Code of Canada) and as a result, should be updated and maintained on a regular basis to ensure that Canadian stakeholder and industry needs are consistently being met.

Efforts were made to determine whether there was still a need for this standard in Canada and/or if it needed to be updated to meet the needs of key stakeholders, however, there was no interest from the ULC Standards Committee to do so. By converting UL 33 into a Joint Canada-US Standard, it was ensured that the US/Canadian stakeholder and industry needs will be met and that the standard will be up to date and accurate.
