I grew up here.
It was a beautiful place with lots of trees, grass, flowers, Mom's garden, memories of my dog Boots and chasing rabbits.
It's been empty since about 1980, silently withstanding the slow march of time.
A silent sentinel.
The house was built in the early 1900's and certainly built much stronger than it would be today.
It faces west...staring steadily into the blazing sun and roaring winds that can batter the Kansas plains.
Vandals have ravaged her, the expansive porch across the front lost it's battle with time, and the white paint has faded and worn away with the scouring rain, wind and dust.
But beauty remains...at least in my eyes.
I see her strength amid the trials of life and time.
I see her scars and sags that show her age.
I see her standing strong with her face to the wind and sun, reminding me to persevere and never give up.
Her foundation is strong, her frame is robust, and she'll stand to the last day.
She'll give it her all - the best she has to give.
I see her face shining with the glory of her accomplishments and triumphs.
And all I can do is live with the same commitment, courage, strength, and perseverance to achieve all that I can and face it with strength and determination.
I see what you can't - for I grew up here.
The past can haunt us or honor us. It's our choice.
Choose.
