Stand Out When Job Searching Over 40

Stand Out When Job Searching Over 40

To get past ATSs and avoid employment age discrimination, you've got to stand out. Both your resume and interviews have to stand out to show employers that you're worth it.

When you're over 40, employers assume that you'll need higher compensation. For most positions, including C-Level jobs, HMs have less expensive choices. To get employers to hire you, you've got to show you're worth it.

One way many age 40 job seekers can show they're worth it is by doing more. If you want to show employers you'll do more on the job than other candidates, start by demonstrating how much more you'll do through your communication process.

Here are two ways you can stand out by showing employers you'll do more - That you're worth it:

  1. Research More Than Just Public Information:?When most job seekers research an employer, they don't go beyond public information (job description, Company website/financials/LinkedIn and Google). Not only does public information give you zero advantage over your competitors, it also doesn't describe the hiring manager's current problems (causing you to brand yourself as the wrong fit - especially the job description). By doing more and gaining inside information, you'll be able to show you're a fit for current (non-public) problems and that you can gain current info from the market. When done well, this helps your resume and interview stand out to employers, rather than just sounding like everyone else.
  2. Heavily Customize Your Resume And Interview To Fit Current Hiring Manager Needs:?Most job seekers use the same basic information for their resume and interview communication, and only an average 15 minutes customizing a resume (and many don't customize at all). But when you heavily customize your resume (an average 1 hour/resume) and interview preparation to focus on the individual hiring manager's needs (see #1 above), you demonstrate that you understand and have experience solving the HM's key/priority problems. When you do this well, you give the impression of anticipating HMs' needs - You show how great you'll be at anticipating needs when you're working there daily.
