Can you believe the IMG Event, NYC is just around the corner?
I'm hearing in the WhatsApp groups that there will be a poster presentation opportunity for those who submitted an extract. I'm looking forward to seeing all of you shine!
But did you know that your poster is more than just a presentation of your research?
It’s also a key tool for networking and building connections within the medical community. So, let's treat these events as a chance to strengthen your professional network and open doors to future collaborations.
If you are nervous about presenting in person, I've developed 9 top tips to help you make the most of your poster presentation at The IMG Event and beyond.
Before the Presentation
1. Practice, Practice, Practice
Preparation is crucial. Rehearse multiple times with your research team, friends, or family. This practice will refine your delivery and ensure your poster supports your key messages.
2. Collaborate with Your Team and PI
Seek feedback from your research team and Principal Investigator (PI). They can highlight critical aspects and potential questions. Understanding your PI’s goals can guide your presentation.
3. Refine Your Poster
Ensure your poster is clear, visually appealing, and accurately represents your research. Make necessary tweaks based on your practice sessions.
During the Presentation
4. Be Welcoming and Engage Your Audience
Greet visitors warmly and stand to the side of your poster to invite closer inspection. Be enthusiastic about your research. Point to relevant sections to help the audience follow along. Make eye contact to acknowledge new arrivals and ask if new viewers need a recap.

5. Tailor Your Presentation
Adapt your presentation based on your audience's interest. Some may want a detailed walkthrough, while others might prefer a quick overview. Be flexible and adjust based on their interest level. ?
6. Highlight Key Methods and Results
Focus on key points and acknowledge any limitations upfront. Concentrate on results that support your conclusions and explain their implications.
7. Use Personal Stories
Share why you got into this research area and what excites you about it. Incorporate at least one personal anecdote to make your presentation relatable and memorable.
After the Presentation
8. Expand Your Network
Be prepared to exchange contact information. Suggest meeting later for in-depth discussions. Networking can lead to future collaborations and professional relationships. Include scannable links or QR Codes on your poster for easy contact sharing.
9. Dealing with Feedback
Welcome feedback and stay open to discussion. If you receive an off-topic question or comment, ask for clarification. Always thank your audience for their interest and feedback.
