Stand Out: Avoid Common Resume Buzzwords and Differentiate Your Profile

Looking for a new job? And tempted to fill your resume with words like "passionate", "motivated", "team player" etc. that sound impressive and catchy?

A big NO.?

Crafting a resume with buzzwords is a thing of the past.

A question to stop and ask yourself. Are these statements really reflections of who you are, or are they just echoing what every other candidate running for this position has to say?

According to a recent study by LinkedIn, these are some of the most overused words on resumes and profiles in 2023.

Experts say these words are problematic because they are vague, generic, and subjective. They are too weak to give the employer any accurate or measurable information about your qualifications, abilities, or personality.?

Most of the time they fail to show any spark and novelty in your writing.?

Trust me, most employers look at such resumes as prominent disappointment. And, rather than demonstrating your competencies through wise words, you end up being disregarded amidst a pile of resumes.

But worry not! There are strategies you can apply to dodge these resume clichés.?

Demonstration Technique: ?

Using concrete examples and numbers to demonstrate your impact instead of saying you are "passionate" about your field, show how you have pursued your passion through projects, courses, publications, or awards.?

Instead of saying you are a "team player", give an example of how you collaborated with others to achieve a goal.?

Stop saying you are "result-oriented", and show your results using quantification using metrics, percentages, or figures.

Action is the key:?

Using action verbs to describe your skills and accomplishments is more powerful and dynamic than passive or generic words. They show what you did, how you did it, and what the outcome was.?

For instance, instead of saying you have "excellent communication skills", say you "presented", "negotiated", "persuaded", or "influenced".?

Everyone in today’s world wants to be a leader. Words like “Leader” or “Leadership Skills” make you look like a layman while wasting your space. Employers want real leaders who fit their needs, not buzzwords. Ditch them or get ditched.

So what’s the solution??

Show, don’t tell, how you rocked as a leader in your past roles. Use action verbs and numbers to back up your claims. Use specific words that capture your strengths, experiences, and traits as a leader. For example, words like “initiated”, “coordinated”, “facilitated”, “negotiated” etc, can make your leadership skills stand out in a powerful, precise, and relevant way.

Maintain relevance, stay connected:?

Seize the spotlight! Choose the keywords that are relevant to the job and industry you are applying for. Nike is not interested in knowing what is stuffed about your FoodPanda career in your Resume.?

Keywords are words or phrases that employers use to search for candidates and filter resumes. They are usually related to the skills, qualifications, or experience required for the role.?

What's the course of action? To find the right keywords, you can look at the job description, the company website, or similar job postings.?

Saving the best for last

Stay clear!? You want to come off as polished, not pretentious so it is important to evade too technical or foreign vocabulary while attempting to seem professional.

These suggestions are there to help you enhance the impact, accuracy, and uniqueness of your resume.?

Resumes are your career tale! A story about your talents, accomplishments, and fit for the required position—not just a list of numbers and facts. Thus, each and every phrase needs to help leave a lasting impact. You'll also get the chance to demonstrate your character, inventiveness, and worth to potential employers.?
