What's Changing
The Gainful Employment Rule Is Coming! What’s the Big Deal?
Over the last two weeks, we attended two webinars presented by the American Institutes for Research , NAICU - National Association of Independent Colleges & Universities , American Council on Education , and the U.S. Department of Education explaining the newly updated Financial Value Transparency and Gainful Employment regulations (The Gainful Employment Rule).
The first webinar in February saw more than 1,000 institutions in attendance. The second webinar on March 1 hit maximum capacity! The regulation takes effect July 1, 2024, and all Title IV eligible institutions and programs are required to submit initial data to the Department of Education by July 31.
Important to know: Your institution needs to start reporting student-level financial information, debt, and outcomes. The intention is to allow students to evaluate whether the program:
Poor scores on outcomes and student debt load could mean your program is put on alert, sanctioned, or loses Title IV eligibility to receive federal student aid.
Additional details regarding The Gainful Employment Rule are expected later this month and in April. For now, the immediate advice to institutions is to assemble your program data (enrollment, completions, cost of attendance, etc.) and student-level financial data (financial aid, loans, debt, etc.) now.

Recruitment Is a Family Affair
Prospective students don’t check their email as often as they should. Inboxes fill up, and suddenly they’re overwhelmed with marketing messages - and crucial information from your college is missing.
This is where family members come in. Communication to the adults in a household informs a “cheerleader” who can guide their student about why your messages are worth acting on. Get our recommended best practices for sending messages to the right audience.
