Stam Unveiled as Technology Broker for Italy by ESA and ASI

On April 17th, Aude de Clercq, Head of Innovation Services Section at European Space Agency - ESA took the stage at the “Space technologies for future ASI missions” workshop held at the Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI) headquarters in Rome. Aude presented the various initiatives ESA has spearheaded to bolster technology transfer, promote the valorisation of space assets, and foster entrepreneurship.

She pointed out that “The ScaleUp programme recently implemented by ESA is unique because it focuses on providing?a set of business development support services for the space industry to grow. It aims to support, fund and guide companies in their journey towards commercialising space technology for terrestrial markets, or the other way around, adapting industrial technologies to fit the needs of the burgeoning space economy. This process plays a pivotal role in driving innovation and economic growth in several ways. Italian space industry has a long history of technology transfer. With the signature of the contract with STAM, funding, technical and commercial support will be made available to Italian industry to commercially de-risk their innovation, on-board partners and strike deals with client to develop new commercial products”.?

Stefano Carosio ????????, Executive Director at STAM S.r.l. , has joined Aude De Clercq on the stage to present the future activities and initiatives the company will support under the recent three years assignment as ESA Technology Broker for Italy. In this framework, Stam will be strictly collaborating with ASI and the national stakeholders’ community to support spin-in and spin-off business cases. “It is a big honour for Stam to support technology transfer of Italian Space technologies, looking also for promising opportunities to get high potential non-space technologies to space. Our 27 years’ space heritage and our system engineering background along with a wide network in different terrestrial markets will be highly instrumental to play at the interface, talking space to space and non-space to non-space innovators”, pointed out Stefano.

Tanya Scalia from ASI Technology Transfer Office highlighted that “space activities often demand cutting-edge technology and pushes the boundaries of what is possible. The innovations developed for space missions frequently have applications beyond the space sector. These innovations can generate concrete benefits in other different industrial sectors, leading, at the same time, also to breakthroughs in areas such as materials science, robotics and communication technology. Overall, technology transfer from space to non-space sectors and vice-versa has the potential to drive innovation, stimulate economic growth, address societal challenges and improve the quality of life for people around the world. We think that the Italian broker will significantly contribute in reaching such relevant goals.

This event showcased the remarkable strides in space activities and highlighted the importance of collaboration and innovation in shaping future endeavours also for the benefit of SMEs.

ESA and ASI will continue to push the boundaries of space and innovation together with the large ecosystem of space and non-space champions. Further information at ESA Commercialisation Gateway (https://commercialisation.esa.int/scaleup).
