Survey on partnerships and initiatives for the SDGs

https://sdgs.un.org/partnerships

?The United Nations 2030 Agenda, approved in 2015 by 193 countries, aims to achieve 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, divided into 169 targets in economic, social, and environmental areas, with local and global application.

The 17 #SDGs are the new reference benchmark for the innovation and sustainability profile of companies and institutions and offer new opportunities to anticipate changing trends in the various economic sectors, to align with the best in class at an international level, to enhance activities already carried out with a view to sustainable innovation, activate new partnerships. Some companies in Italy have been able (Focus Lab, for example) to promote projects and support services to businesses, public bodies, and non-profit organizations for the definition of concrete strategies and actions consistent with the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. The approach generally focuses on updating/coaching with respect to the Objectives, on Baseline Review actions to assess the degree of alignment with the objectives of the Agenda, and on the definition of Policies and Strategies to maximize the opportunities deriving from the activation of actions of Sustainability in line with the SDG. In particular, the achievement of the objectives of the 2030 Agenda cannot be separated from a transversal involvement of the various stakeholders both locally and globally, to achieve the "Partnership for the Goals" invoked by SDG 17.

As an Architect, I was asked by the United Nations about the approaches of Stakeholder Engagement, Participatory Planning, and Design Thinking with companies and public bodies on issues of Urban Planning, Strategic and Sector Planning, Local Development, Green Economy, Building Redevelopment, and Sustainable Mobility. Having been invited by the Division for Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) to participate in and upgrade the Partnership Platform, I decided to participate in 2 projects:

  1. Architecture 2030 (2989);
  2. A Blueprint for Ocean and Coastal Sustainability (IOC/UNESCO, FAO, IMO, UNDP) (1894) ".

?Both of these two topics are of strong attraction to me for two fundamental reasons: my profession and boundless love for the sea. First, I realized that it is an American company that is interested in sustainable architecture; second, within the UN, the project for the protection of the oceans belongs to Italians.

The Partnership Platform is a global registry of voluntary commitments and partnerships undertaken by governments and a wide range of stakeholders to assist in the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including through related United Nations conferences and thematic action networks, such as the UN Ocean…

All stakeholders are encouraged to register their partnerships and voluntary commitments that support the implementation of the SDGs, either on the platform or through the different action networks, based on their preferences and alignment of interest.

The new platform includes all previously published initiatives. Those who registered initiatives using the previous platform can find their own initiatives by searching for them in the new one. To update your initiative, you log into your account using the email that was used in our old system. If you can't remember your password, use the password reset feature. As the accounts are encrypted, we are unable to provide you with the password manually. Among the interaction techniques used, we include EASW UE (European Awareness Scenario Workshop), Bar Camp, World Cafè, Project Cycle Management (PCM), Project Canvas / Business Model Canvas, Open Space Technology, Multi-stakeholder Forum, Focus Group, and Webinar.

Since 2015, various projects have been carried out in Italy, projects dedicated to the implementation of actions in the implementation of the 17 Global Goals with companies, directly involving companies and public bodies and other organizations. As a practical consequence, the following must be indicated: Sustainability Report with reference to the 2030 Agenda, coordinating Business Laboratories for Sustainability on the subject, Operating Guides, Training Events, Surveys, interventions at national events and various articles on the subject published in specialized journals .

?

? In brief my personal experience described below

Previously, at the request of some researchers (from Newcastle University and Transformative Partnerships 2030), I was invited to respond to a survey to help understand how voluntary initiatives and partnerships are supporting the implementation of the SDGs, the challenges they face and the type support which would prove to be more effective. This survey is a useful contribution to better understanding the successes and challenges of partnerships, including those related to the United Nations conferences and forums scheduled for 2022, including the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development and the Second Conference of Nations. Unite on the ocean, among others. After responding to the survey, some invitations to take an active part in selecting the stakeholders with whom to participate through my company in sustainability initiatives were taken: So I chose: Architecture 2030 and?"A Blueprint for Ocean and Coastal Sustainability (IOC / UNESCO, FAO, IMO, UNDP) (1894) ".

1)?????Mission of Architecture 2030s

Its mission is to rapidly transform the built environment from a major emitter of greenhouse gases to a central solution to the climate crisis. For nearly two decades, the company has?provided the leadership and designed the actions needed to achieve CO2 emissions reductions for a high probability of limiting planetary warming to 1.5°C. Their action plan has two primary objectives:

1. Achieve a dramatic reduction in the energy consumption and CO2 emissions of the built environment by 2030, and a complete phase-out of fossil fuel CO2 emissions by 2040; and,

2. Advance the development of sustainable, resilient, equitable, and zero-carbon buildings communities, and cities.

They empower the building and industrial sectors to achieve these goals through Design & Planning, Education, Policy, and Collaboration

Building on nearly two decades of success, they’re responding to the urgency of this moment with a range of initiatives to catalyze action and accelerate results. These feature a whole-sector approach to the built environment, including a focus on embodied carbon and materials, local government codes and policies that rapidly scale solutions, “how-to” conferences, and major international sector actions and collaborations.

In the course of transforming the built environment, significant market opportunities will emerge and help to drive this urgent transition. The research illustrates that low- to no-carbon techniques and applications can be implemented at no incremental cost, as the evolving regulatory environment increasingly mandates their adoption.

Architecture 2030’s key strength is its grounding in and connection to the building industry. They provide cutting-edge thought leadership as we align the architectural, planning, and building community and political leaders around the urgency of achieving zero emissions by 2040.

The stakeholders leading in climate action now will be best positioned to capitalize on and lead the transition.

2) In merit to my second choice:?A Blueprint for Ocean and Coastal Sustainability (IOC / UNESCO, FAO, IMO, UNDP) (1894) ". ?I can say that:

1. The oceans and the creatures therein are a necessary part of life on this planet.

2. Maintaining the health of the oceans and the abundance of its fisheries, together with the wise and safe uses of all its resources, must be accepted and honored by governments so that future generations can enjoy the continuing benefit for all peoples.

3. Understanding the marine environment and its living community, is necessary for the stewardship of the oceans and the seas and for the making of decisions to protect and husband its resources.

4. We must work together to succeed - within countries people can influence ocean policies if they act together - internationally, countries should help their neighbors and accept regional policies and actions - countries having the knowledge and resources should assist less fortunate nations - data and information on the ocean should be readily available - international and intergovernmental organizations should be used to generate global programs and agreements.

I promise to remember my oceans charter, in my treatment of the oceans and the waters that flow into the ocean, in my work and in my play, and in the decisions that I make.

In conclusion, I hope to give my contribute and learn more about sustainability.

?My motto is: SCIO ME NESCIRE - I know not to know (Socrates).

I invite you to read Prof. George Onsy’s proposal for COP27, in Sharm El Sheikh ( November 6-18, 2022).
