Stairs that tell you the inside story

Most feature stairs are designed to be pure Wow Factor objects, and EeStairs have made hundreds of them. But sometimes we have to make sure that the staircases we make and install play a supporting role to fit in with the look and vibe of a complete interior design scheme. We’ve worked with dozens of architects and interior designers to produce stairs that do just that – and in many different ways.

One obvious example is the staircase (below) linking two levels at one of London’s coolest and newest creative industries centres, the Angel Building. This building was designed by Britain’s third biggest architects, AHMM. The stylish geometry of this interior is clever – crisp and angular, but with a relaxed loose-fit feel. The stairs have stepped seating at the base, angled oak banister-posts and balusters, and an angled turn at the rest-landing, which complements the geometry of the reception desk and bench seating.

By complete contrast, in Noordwijk, Holland, EeStairs responded to IAA Architects design by making the stairs, reception desk and a 7m by 7m wall cabinet. They seem like one extensive piece of furniture which defines the character of the reception area of the MFC company’s office.

“The steel staircase is covered with wood,” explained Johan Floor of EeStairs, “and a lot of attention was paid to the different materials, in various dark shades, which give the stairs and desk a unique character that’s beautiful to look at from all sides. They are completely part of the interior design.”

I would also like to highlight the Nike store in Utrecht. Here, EeStairs made and installed a staircase (below) designed by Claessens Erdman that looked lean, strong and stripped for action, and visually epitomises Nike’s iconic catchline: Just Do It. And these stairs did do it!

We emphasised that interiors and staircases that reflect brand identities can take many different forms. In Waddinxveen, Holland, the staircase made by EeStairs fitted in perfectly with the ethos of the organic fruit and vegetable distributor Eosta/Nature & More. Working with Rau Architecten and Ex Interiors, EeStairs made a staircase with seating sections which has a concealed steel structure clad in elm, a sustainable timber species. The relaxed, open feel of the staircase was accentuated by the closely spaced elm balusters without handrails.

And at the Bolidt Innovation Centre in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, Holland, the bright yellow stairs and tribune seating made and installed by EeStairs was not only visually striking but demonstrated the quality of Bolidt’s durable flooring products. As you can see, the design and precise edges and finishes of the stairs suit the modernist interior of the space perfectly. And the project architect,  Joris Lüchinger, added: “There was a perfect cooperation with EeStairs.”
