Staffordshire University to present at widening access convention

Members of the School of Justice, Security and Sustainability will be presenting the innovative work our police partnership delivers around widening access in police recruitment at the third annual NERUPI Convention.

Titled?‘Transitions and Transformations: New Opportunities for a 21st Century Education?’, the conference takes place on?15 September 2021?and will see people from the UK’s education sector come together to share innovations and best practice in developing equal access to FE and HE.

The conference is free to attend?for all NERUPI members.?

Dr Laura Walton-Williams, Philip Wagg, Bethany Hepher and Jennifer Glover will be presenting our innovative approach to the Policing Education Qualification Framework (PEQF), which was introduced in 2018.?The PEQF saw the creation of new entry routes into policing being introduced. Under the PEQF, our University delivers?Police Constable Degree Apprenticeships,?Degree Holder Entry Programmes?and?Pre-join degrees?to more than 2000 student officers.?

The introduction of the new pathways has not been without access challenges. Applicants with a lack of qualifications and lack of representation of the communities our forces serve were key issues that we identified early on.?

We have worked with our partners Staffordshire Police, Warwickshire Police, West Mercia Police and West Midlands Police to develop solutions which include RPEL (Recognised Prior Experiential Learning) and?Step Up to Policing, an adaptation of the University’s hugely successful Step Up course. We have also collaborated with our partners to pilot digital Positive Action initiatives.

About?NERUPI:?

NERUPI is a community of practice for those seeking to reduce inequalities in higher education access, participation and progression. With over 70 member organisations we are able to share our expertise and explore new approaches to evaluating the impact of interventions in this complex and evolving area.

We hope some of our followers will join us online to hear how we’re advancing inclusion and access to policing careers.?

NERUPI members can register attendance here. The presentation from the School of Justice, Security and Sustainability can be seen from 12.25pm-12.55pm (parallel session B in the programme).
