Staffing shortages eased by updated NMC rules

The changes to the English language requirements previously announced by the NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) came into effect on Wednesday 8th February and will be fully operational by the summer.

One of the reasons the NMC gave for the?changes was concerns that there are skilled professionals working in the UK health and care sector who demonstrate English language proficiency in practice but who are unable to join the NMC register because they are narrowly missing out on achieving current accepted pass scores.

We outlined the changes in one of our earlier blogs .

As well as being good news for the international nursing community there are wider implications for private health and social care sector employers. Some of these advantages are listed below:

  • This new flexibility will benefit employers by enabling them to reduce costs by recruiting senior health care assistants who are registered nurses in their country of origin. These individuals will be qualified to carry out many of the responsibilities of a registered nurse such as the administering of medication.
  • By recruiting experienced overseas nurses as senior care assistants savings will be made on the standard international nurse recruitment expenses such as OSCE/CBT Training and exam Fees.
  • Employers will benefit from a greater supply of international nurses and care assistants to support their permanent staffing solutions.
  • Recruit senior health care assistants who can be promoted to a registered nurse position after they have worked for the employer for 12 months. The employer will be able to provide supporting information if their employee has worked for them for a minimum of 12 months and has missed out on the required IELTS/OET score meaning more flexibility for nurses relocating to the UK to gain their NMC pin.
  • Ease the transition from senior carer to registered nurse as the individual will have experience of working in the particular care environment with its unique culture and systems.
