Staffers: A reflection on life in Parliament

After two and a half years of working for MPs, I left Parliament in July for pastures new.
I loved my time as a parliamentary staffer. Every day was different, and I had the opportunity to genuinely help people and support causes that mattered.
It was also the privilege of walking and working in those corridors of power. The magic really does never go away (neither do the rats).
Growing up on a council estate in a rural area, I knew how lucky I was to be there. Shaking hands with prime ministers was not on the cards when I was kid!
Office managers, parliamentary assistants, researchers, caseworkers, interns and so many more help to keep democracy ticking over on the daily.
There are also the superheroes who run Parliament itself. I could write a whole book with tributes to them.
Adunni who makes the best meat wraps and puts a smile on your face without fail. Alan who ensures everyone feels welcome as he watches over the estate. Chris who always makes sure offices aren't falling apart and knows the answer to any question. Lovely people.
I'm not sure how many people will read this - and I don't blame you if you don't, there are bigger things happening in the world - but I thought I would write a series of short articles about life as an MP's staffer and what it's really like to work in Parliament.
It won't be a gossip column. Just an insight into a part of the political world which goes under the radar. Hope you enjoy!
