Staff Spotlight: Becca Smitton, MSW, MPH, LCSW
How long have you been at CHOP? 3 years
Briefly describe your role with the Community Violence and Trauma Support team: My role with the Growing Resilience in Teens (GRIT) Assessment Program involves working with children and families who have experienced a recent traumatic event for a comprehensive needs assessment. This assessment includes screening for social needs as well as assessing for trauma related mental health symptoms and other behavioral health related concerns. Following the assessment, I make direct referrals and connect children and their families to the most appropriate care given what is learned during the assessment.
What do you find most fulfilling about your job? I love meeting with families and offering them space to discuss their concerns and goals for the future. I have so much gratitude for their willingness to share and welcome us into their lives. Working with my team is also a huge part of this job that I enjoy and appreciate. We all have different expertise and viewpoints, which leaves me feeling like I am always learning something.?
Share one fun fact about yourself: Before going to graduate school, I taught English in Guatemala.
