Greetings, Skill Stackers!
Welcome back to another exciting edition of “Stacked Skills,” your go-to guide for acquiring skills that enhance your wellbeing, success, and all-around awesomeness. This week, we're diving into the art of networking like a pro—because let's face it, life's all about who you know, right? So, grab your virtual business cards and put on your networking hat (or headband, if that’s more your style), because we're about to turn you into a Networking Ninja!
1. What's the Deal with Networking?
First things first, what exactly is networking? It's not just about collecting business cards or LinkedIn connections—it's about building genuine relationships. Networking is your secret weapon for career growth, finding mentors, discovering new opportunities, and maybe even making a new friend or two along the way.
I’ve found immense opportunities in networking with like-minded entrepreneurs (and no, it’s not about selling them insurance!) The potential collaborations and partnerships, for example, to solve each other’s problems. Most recently, I met a friend who had warehouse space and no tenant. And the next friend I met had goods to store, but no warehouse… Talk about being a conduit!
So, let's channel our inner extrovert (or introvert, we don't judge) and dive in!
2. Embrace Your Inner Social Butterfly
Whether you're a natural-born social butterfly or more of a social caterpillar, anyone can master the art of networking. Start small—smile, introduce yourself, and make genuine connections. Remember, networking is about quality, not quantity. So, instead of trying to collect a hundred business cards, focus on making a few meaningful connections that could lead to exciting opportunities.
30 business cards, with no recollection of whom they were collected from, is just cold-call list. What I do, is have a deeper conversation with each new friend, then I write down what we talked about on the back of their name cards after we part ways. This way, I can recall with ease who is what. And that leads to a more meaningful follow-up later!
3. Perfect Your Elevator Pitch
Imagine you're stuck in an elevator with your dream employer—what would you say? That's your elevator pitch. Keep it short, sweet, and memorable. Highlight your strengths, what you're passionate about, and what you're looking for. Practice in front of a mirror, to your pet, or your favorite houseplant until it rolls off your tongue effortlessly.
Smooth like butter.
4. Be a Good Listener (No, Really!)
Networking isn't just about talking—it's about listening. Show genuine interest in what others have to say. Ask open-ended questions, listen actively, and remember details about the people you meet. You'll be amazed at how much you can learn and how much others appreciate being heard.
5. Network Online Like a Boss
In our digital age, online networking is just as important as face-to-face connections. Polish your LinkedIn profile, join industry-specific groups, and engage in discussions. Share relevant content, comment on posts, and connect with people who inspire you. Virtual networking opens up a world of opportunities beyond geographical boundaries.
Like you’d never go to a restaurant that has no google reviews… make your web presence known!
6. Follow Up Like a Pro
Networking doesn’t end when the event is over or the Zoom call ends. Follow up with your new connections! Send a personalized message or email within 24-48 hours to express your appreciation for meeting them. Reference something you discussed to help them remember you. This simple step can turn a brief encounter into a long-lasting professional relationship.
The name card trick works, if you have a f2f meet. What about online meets? I use google documents, or google sheets, to record summaries of chats with key persons. Information is power.
7. Offer Value Without Expecting Immediate Returns
Be generous with your knowledge, skills, and connections. Offer help or share resources without expecting anything in return. Networking is about building relationships based on trust and mutual benefit. The goodwill you create can come back to you in unexpected ways.
Just like how I linked warehouses, you can be conduits for your network. Then you will realize more and more people come to you. You will attract your network!
8. Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
Networking can be intimidating, especially if you’re more introverted. Challenge yourself to attend events, join virtual meetings, or strike up conversations with strangers. The more you practice, the easier it becomes. Remember, every networking interaction is an opportunity for growth.
9. Be Authentic and Genuine
Authenticity is key to building meaningful connections. Be yourself—people appreciate honesty and sincerity. Don't try to be someone you're not or pretend to have more experience than you do. Your genuine personality is your greatest asset.
Don’t fake it, people can smell a false pretense a mile away.
And nobody likes it.
10. Celebrate Your Networking Wins
Lastly, celebrate your networking victories—big and small. Did you make a valuable connection? Land a new client? Secure an informational interview? Celebrate these wins to boost your confidence and motivation. Networking is hard work, and you deserve recognition for your efforts.
Wrapping It Up: Become a Networking Ninja
And there you have it—ten tips to help you become a Networking Ninja and forge connections with ease. Remember, networking is an ongoing process that requires practice and patience. Whether you're attending events, connecting online, or reaching out to new contacts, embrace the journey and enjoy building your network.
