Hey Skill Stackers!
Welcome back to another electrifying edition of Stacked Skills, where we’re here to help you level up your life, one skill at a time. This week, we’re diving headfirst into the exciting world of public speaking. Yes, you heard me right – that heart-pounding, sweat-inducing, nerve-wracking activity that sends shivers down the spines of even the bravest souls. But fear not, because I’ve got your back!
Public Speaking: The Art of Not Passing Out in Front of a Crowd
Public speaking can be terrifying. The mere thought of standing in front of a crowd, all eyes on you, can be enough to send even the most confident person into a panic-induced frenzy. But fear not, dear readers, for conquering your fear of public speaking is not only possible but also incredibly empowering.
Step 1: Embrace the Butterflies
First things first, let’s address the elephant in the room – those pesky butterflies fluttering around in your stomach. Instead of viewing them as a sign of impending doom, embrace them as a natural part of the public speaking experience. After all, if butterflies can gracefully flutter their way through life, so can you!
Pro-tip: Almost EVERY experienced speaker [me, included!!!] gets butterflies before the start. We just get them flying in formation for the duration of the talk. Case in point, I delivered a Keynote for my company on the 1st Jul 2024. In this talk, I started with cold stares and watchful eyes. And ended with 62 of ~200 plus attendees sending me a text to say it was a great talk [I did make it easy for them to do so!]
Step 2: Practice, Practice, Practice
They say practice makes perfect, and when it comes to public speaking, truer words have never been spoken. Whether you’re delivering a keynote address or simply introducing yourself at a networking event, rehearsing your speech until it’s as smooth as butter will help calm those nerves and boost your confidence.
Practicing in a room by yourself is a step 1. If you want to be precise, videotape yourself talking, so you can observe and sharpen [this is for those needing a high level of perfection, and is usually not required] ←useful for milliondollar presentations.
Step 3: Find Your Inner Beyoncé
Channeling your inner Beyoncé may sound like a tall order, but trust me – she’s in there somewhere. Confidence is key when it comes to public speaking. If you imagine yourself throwing on your metaphorical sequined bodysuit and strutting your stuff like the superstar you are, you will project that confidence and walk the walk. Who run the world? You, after mastering the art of public speaking!
Step 4: Engage Your Audience
Public speaking isn’t just about delivering a monologue – it’s about forging a connection with your audience. Whether it’s through humor, storytelling, or thought-provoking questions, finding ways to engage your audience will not only hold their attention but also make your speech infinitely more memorable.
I pulled this trick too, during my keynote. It was a hit!

Step 5: Embrace the Unexpected
No matter how much you prepare, there’s always the possibility of the unexpected rearing its head during a speech. Whether it’s a rogue microphone or an unexpected interruption, learning to roll with the punches and adapt on the fly will not only save you from potential embarrassment but also showcase your resilience and quick thinking.
This happened to me too, during that same keynote. 2 online surveys that should have been connected to my powerpoint, failed to load. Just moved on, saying oops my online survey doesn’t work. Too bad lets #getonwithlife.
Also, missed out 1 or so major point in my delivery. No one knew the difference, though. Haha!
Still, 62 wins out of 200 plus attendees!
Step 6: Celebrate Your Victories
Finally, don’t forget to celebrate your victories – no matter how small they may seem. Whether it’s conquering your fear of public speaking or delivering a flawless presentation, every step forward is worth celebrating. So go ahead, treat yourself to that victory dance – you’ve earned it!

4 个月I always enjoy a speaker who is not a recorder - those ones who have just memorized their lines including the jokes and pauses and gestures just feel false to me - I'd rather hear someone speak with passion, from the heart.

4 个月Hey Clarence, awesome news! You know what's super underrated in public speaking? The use of silence. A well-timed pause can make your message hit home harder than you think. It's like letting a joke land before moving on – pure magic! Would love to hear how you incorporate this into your talks and learn from you!
