Stabilized to Destabilized

A few days before we came across a documentary film "Breaking Boundaries" by Johan Rockstr?m (professor of environmental science). This post will be a compilation of our understandings.?#climatechange?#tipingpoint?#environment

Our earth became a habitual place before 10,000 years ago. From that time lives began to emerge. Every living creature’s flora and fauna belongs to this place, but in recent times humans are utilizing these resources extensively in the name of development to satisfy their greed.

As mentioned by Johan our earth was unstable the temperature was varying continuously. But before 10,000 years ago the temperature stabilizes called as Holocene. where the temperature varies + or - 1 degree Celsius.

What makes the earth stable?

As long as the earth is stable it will be suitable for living. These are some factors that keep the earth stable,

  • Distance from the sun
  • Atmosphere (balanced chemical composition)
  • Ozone layer.
  • Forest, ice layers, etc.

What is the current problem?

It takes thousands of years for the earth to reach a stable state, but in recent times within 50 years we humans destabilize the earth. Which causes a serious problem "Global warming". There are many effects but we can easily visualize the melting of ice (because it is more oblivious to see).

If this continues, we reach the tipping point- the point at which changes become irreversible.

Boundaries mentioned by Johan

  • Climatic change
  • Biodiversity
  • freshwater
  • flow of nutrients
  • ocean acidification
  • Ozone layer
  • Aerosol loading
  • land system change
  • Unquantified changes.

Crossing the boundaries, we may reach the tipping point which destabilizes the earth.

Effects at present:

  • Due to global warming, the green land ice caps are melting, other ice covers will also melt and increases the ocean level.
  • Due to a rise in temperature belching of coral reefs occurs which affects the underwater ecosystem.
  • As our population increases, we need more land to cultivate food so we humans are destroying the forest and performing agriculture, which affects the flora and fauna in that place.
  • Recent this year Australian forest fire has witnessed the worst effect of global warming.

What can we do?

  1. We can reduce the use of fossil fuels and we can use a cycle that reduces pollution and Utilize renewable resources.
  2. Practice optimized agricultural practice and reduce uses of excess nitrogen and phosphorus which washes into river, instead use them at optimum level.
  3. Plant more trees afforestation. Eat healthy foods. Aim at zero waste.

These are some of the insights we got from that documentary for more insights you can watch the documentary "Breaking Boundaries".
