The Story of St Valentine: A Single Man, Rebel and Martyr

The legend (among many) which most resonates with me contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II, known as "Claudius the Cruel" decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, Claudius II outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine knowingly risked his life in the name of love. He defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. The sentence was carried out on February 14, on or about the year 269.

Fun Fact: Did you know St. Valentine is also the patron Saint of bees?
