St Raphael Resort and Marina: Pioneering Carbon Neutrality in Cyprus's Hotel Industry
In an era where the ramifications of climate change are increasingly evident, the urgency to adopt eco-friendly measures has never been more critical. While many businesses evolve merely to stay competitive, some choose to be pioneers. St Raphael Resort and Marina in Limassol, a venerable institution in Cyprus's hotel landscape, has recently achieved the commendable milestone of carbon neutrality.??
?
St Raphael's carbon neutral certification was achieved after a meticulous assessment of the hotel's carbon footprint. This was subsequently reduced by 10.2% by sourcing 413,000 kWh of electricity from a solar farm. The remaining carbon footprint was offset via the billion-air portfolio of verified carbon reduction project which, emphasise renewable energy and ecological capital. The hotel's contributions have supported the Cypriot solar energy industry while also provided funding for the development of a wind farm, a tree conservation initiative and a safe water project. These efforts not only support 7 UN sustainable development goals but also translate to significant carbon reductions for St Raphael.
?
This accomplishment is not an isolated event but a culmination of St Raphael's consistent efforts towards sustainability over several years. Under the leadership of it Managing Director, Farah Shammas, the resort has made significant strides towards sustainability and eco-friendliness. Ms Shammas has been instrumental in driving initiatives to reduce the hotel's carbon footprint, demonstrating that even large establishments can operate with a minimal environmental impact. Her commitment to sustainability is evident in her efforts to transform the hotel into an eco-friendly and sustainable business model.?
?
The hotel has transitioned to eco-friendly products in housekeeping, eliminating the adverse effects of chemical pollutants. Their commitment to reducing food waste takes many forms such as locally sourcing for their kitchens which not only supports Cypriot farmers but also reduces food miles. At least a third of all menus in their eight restaurants is plant based, reducing further their carbon footprint. Moreover, food waste is minimised by using unused animal produce for local rescued and adopted animals. Addressing the global plastic crisis, St Raphael has taken significant strides by eliminating single-use plastics, becoming the first Limassol certified plastic-free beach, and replacing single use plastic water bottles with tetrapak bottles, glass alternatives and filtered water stations. Their innovative initiatives, like the use of biodegradable paper towels, underscore their ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship.
?
The first in the island to have an eco-friendly gym, where electricity is produced while guests work out, was pioneering. Their award winning spa uses only vegan and eco-friendly products and all room key cards in the resort are made of recycled plastic or wood. Staff uniforms are sourced from ethically responsible and eco-friendly brands and the resort has a large photovoltaic system to assist with their electricity needs. They offer possibly the largest bicycle parking area for any hotel and have over 10 electric car charging stations on site. This is all to mention but a few of the many initiatives in place and more are on the way as technology and research unfold new ideas and methods to help large organizations become more sustainable.

Their evolution over the years, especially in hosting sustainability and ESG events, is commendable. Their minimal environmental footprint is a testament to their management's vision. Looking ahead, St Raphael is poised to operate entirely on solar energy within three years, promising a significant cut in their scope 2 emissions. This move will bolster Cyprus's solar energy sector, propelling the island towards a sustainable energy future. The ripple effects of St Raphael's achievements extend beyond Cyprus, offering developing nations the financial support needed to pursue sustainable growth.
