We analyzed the social media buzz around St. Patrick's Day across the top 100 countries and found that the holiday sparks joy in people of all backgrounds. Whether you're Irish or not, St. Patrick's Day is a time to let loose, come together, and revel in the magic of Irish culture.
According to our analysis of social media and forum discussions, the U.S. is by far the most enthusiastic country when it comes to St. Patrick's Day, with over 2 million sampled posts related to the holiday in the last 27 months.
Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Canada also rank highly, with more than 530,000 posts combined. Comparatively, the next 11 countries on our top 15 list had just over 30,000 posts combined, demonstrating the holiday's global popularity and the U.S.'s clear lead in celebrating it.
Our ranking of the top 15 countries that participate in St. Patrick’s Day is based on a weighted score (on a scale of 0 to 10) that considers both Post Volume and Net Sentiment. Our analysis considered English, Portuguese, Bengali, Czech, Cantonese, Polish, Arabic, Thai, and Spanish speakers in relevant countries. Counts include a 10% sample of Tweets. It is possible to include 100% of Tweets with a premium upgrade.
The U.S (92%), Ireland (93%), U.K. (94%), and Canada (89%) all had high Net Sentiment, within 5 percentage points of each other. However, Portugal (100%), Bangladesh (100%), Czech Republic (100%), Hong Kong (99%) and Poland (96%) are more favorable towards the holiday.
Net Sentiment is a ratio of positive to negative sentiment about a topic on a scale of -100% to 100%.
The high ranking of the U.S., Ireland, U.K., and Canada may not come as a surprise as these countries have strong cultural and historical ties to St. Patrick's Day. The high Net Sentiment in these countries shows that the holiday is well-received by people in these regions. This presents an opportunity for marketers to leverage the popularity of the holiday in these countries to connect with consumers and drive engagement at scale.?
The higher Net Sentiment in Portugal, Bangladesh, Czech Republic, Hong Kong, and Poland may be because St. Patrick's Day is not widely celebrated in these countries, making it a novel experience for those who do celebrate. This could reflect a general trend towards increased interest in global cultural events and celebrations, providing a valuable opportunity for marketers to expand their reach and appeal to a more diverse audience.
