St John's Summer Bulletin
St John's Foundation
St John’s has supported the Bath community for 850 years. We work to Change Lives. For Good.
A note from our Chief Exec, David Hobdey:
?Here at St John’s, changing lives for good is at the heart of our work. I would like to take this opportunity to share with you the important work of our Crisis Programme . The programme is aimed at supporting anyone in Bath and North East Somerset who might be experiencing financial hardship due to circumstances out of their control.
Last year, we assisted in a variety of impactful ways including providing funding to help a victim of serious domestic violence move on with their life, the purchase of a new television for a man with social anxiety and learning difficulties, counselling for a stressed mum with an autistic son, a range of funding to complete car repairs and the provision of funding for essential items for a young foster parent and baby.
Throughout 2023, the Crisis Programme provided help to 332 households and a total of £203,000 was awarded.?Of these applications:
We are so proud to see the direct impact of our efforts helping those in need within our community and will continue to provide support to those facing financial challenges. For more information on how to access the Crisis Programme, please follow the links to our website.
We wish you well as we move into summer and look forward to sharing our endeavours and activities with you over the coming months
How our Language for Life programme is having a systemic impact on Early Years settings in BaNES
Good communication skills strengthen a child’s ability to learn and manage their emotions and behaviour. However, under-served children can arrive at school with lower speech and language ability, impacting learning.
Our Language for Life programme has seen such positive early results that it is already due to be extended and rolled out in more settings. Our latest impact report , carried out independently, has indicated that the programme is having a systemic impact on the settings it is supporting.
Providing a ray of hope?
Despite Bath’s picturesque facade, beneath the surface that captivates countless tourists, lies poverty and hardship.
Shockingly, 43% of residents struggle to pay fuel bills, and 21,000 individuals worry about running out of food before they can afford more. Despite these challenges, St John’s remains resolute in our mission to provide a ray of hope to those in need within our community.

Impact evaluation report: our progress
In 2020 we launched an ambitious strategy that focused on narrowing the attainment gap for Key Stage 2 children across Bath and North East Somerset by 2030.
Our 2022-2023 impact evaluation report is now live on our website. Find out more about the amazing work we are carrying out in school settings across BaNES.
Meet our Chair of Trustees, Ben Fletcher?
“Constant innovation is necessary to solve many of the problems we are facing. We can then share what we’ve learned with other charities, both within and outside of our region. We, in turn, can also learn from others and test their methods to see if they have a positive impact in BaNES.”
We sat down with Ben Fletcher, our Chair of Trustees, to find out more about the role he plays in developing and supporting our current funding strategy for the Foundation Fund.
