St Ives School of Painting - Director Recruitment

St Ives School of Painting - Director Recruitment

Role: Director

Organisation: St Ives School of Painting

Location: St Ives, Cornwall TR26 1NG. Combination of on site and remote working (2 days per week to be worked on site)

Salary: £37,000 pro rata (30 hours per week, to be worked flexibly)

This is an exceptional opportunity for an artist who shares our passion and enthusiasm to enrich people’s lives by nurturing and enabling their creative spirit. We are an historically important painting school with big aspirations for the future.

The opportunity to join as our new Director comes at a challenging but exciting moment for the School, at a pivotal time in our journey. Over the past decade, our Director and team have worked hard to nurture the ethos on which the School was founded, as well as putting the School on a firm financial footing to ensure that it thrives in a very different world. The biggest change has been the introduction of the online art school, giving the School the chance to shine, ironically due to the lockdown in March 2020. This has affirmed the importance of the School to our community, locally, nationally and internationally and has opened up huge opportunities for the School to reach many more people. For the new Director this will be an exciting new venture to explore and develop further.

In return for your commitment, we offer a unique opportunity to put your stamp on the organisation and on the Cornish arts and culture scene, whilst benefiting from a hugely supportive Board and a strong team, ready for the next chapter in our future. This will be an opportunity to shape the new strategy as well as maximize the potential of a recently expanded team.

The role requires a highly organised and generous team player with excellent communication skills. With a background in developing people and organisations, a natural collaborator with experience in commissioning and working with a range of contemporary artists, you will lead on the practical everyday creative programming as well as drive the overall strategic vision for the charity.

We understand the importance of this role being able to continue with personal creative practice alongside being the Director. We will provide 12 days’ paid practice development time annually in addition to holiday. It could be used for extra time in the studio or a residency. We have deliberately kept this as a part-time role to enable time for this personal practice.

We are an intimate operation, operating out of two studio spaces in the attic of Porthmeor studios. We are small and rooted in place, yet at the same time global in reach and outlook. We are inspired by the history and location of our home in St Ives Cornwall but also look outwards to keep our offer vibrant and exciting.

It is critical that we continue to champion our ethos and charitable objectives of inclusiveness and generosity, and to continue to nurture dreams, from those of Leonard Fuller in the trenches of the Western Front to the kitchen table studios of our students in a global pandemic.

This special little art school in St Ives can really change lives and that is something really rewarding to be part of. We hope you share our passion and excitement and are inspired by this exciting opportunity.
