Forget climbing the corporate ladder. Today's most successful careers are less about scaling a straight line and more about navigating a jungle gym – swinging from role to role, gathering skills and experiences like so many exotic fruits in a vibrant marketplace.

Remember those "connect the dots" puzzles from childhood? And who could forget those word searches, diligently completed with a beloved Nana by your side? Turns out, your career path is kind of like that – except instead of cute animals or hidden words, you're connecting diverse roles, industries, and experiences, creating a delicious tasting menu of YOU.

For years, we were told to pick a lane and stay in it. But guess what? That's about as exciting as a bowl of plain oatmeal. The truth is, non-linear career paths are where the real flavor bursts happen.

Take my own journey, for example. I started out in sales, quickly discovering a knack for connecting with people and exceeding targets, like a perfectly ripe avocado, ready to be enjoyed. This led to a promotion to Sales Manager, where I honed my leadership skills and learned to motivate and inspire teams, adding a zesty lime squeeze to my professional repertoire. From there, I moved into account management, gaining valuable experience in building and nurturing client relationships, like a master chef carefully cultivating a sourdough starter.

But I didn't stop there. I continued to explore different avenues, taking on roles in recruiting, training, and eventually, marketing, adding sprinkles of cinnamon and nutmeg to my professional spice rack. Each step of the way, I was adding new tools to my professional toolkit – communication, leadership, customer service, project management, strategic thinking – the list goes on! It was like creating a delicious smoothie, blending different ingredients to create a unique and satisfying whole.

And the adventure continues! Since leaving Rogers in March of 2024, I've embarked on a new chapter, founding a blog and newsletter called The Bite-Sized Brief (yes, the very one you're reading now!). I've also embraced my passion for wellness by becoming an Educator for lululemon, adding a refreshing green juice to my daily routine. These experiences have not only expanded my skillset but also enriched my perspective, adding even more depth and dimension to my professional profile, like a perfectly balanced charcuterie board with a variety of flavors and textures.

While specialists have their place (we still need brain surgeons and rocket scientists, people!), generalists are like the nutritional powerhouses of the workforce – packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, ready to boost your overall health and well-being. They possess a natural or cultivated curiosity and an almost unquenchable thirst for learning and continued growth, making them uniquely exceptional in how they approach business and life.
