The Spy in Your Hand
Spy! You are being watched, by your own devices! Nothing like raising your anxiety level, but your sense of privacy is just that, a sense and not a reality. If you own an cell phone, tablet or laptop computer, each is equipped with a built in camera and microphone and therein lies the window into your life, without your permission. In the name of convenience, we users of these wonderful devices allowed this to happen, and hackers or snoopers of any type are all too willing and able to take advantage of our complacency.
“Hey Siri? Call my wife.” “Alexa? Read me the latest headlines.” “Roku? Find Bubble Guppies” (that one is for my grand daughter). Yes, those neat “conveniences” may be of great service, but they also reveal our devices are listening and watching our every move. Who else is listening and watching, keeping statistics on our behavior, and who has access to that information about us?
But wait! There’s more! Not Ginsu knives, but just as cutting. Remember the FBI demanding Apple open a backdoor into its iOS so it could get information out of a terrorist’s iPhone? Congress is now mulling over new regulations requiring government access to encrypted phone data in the name of national security. Will they also require secret access to turn on the microphones, cameras and recorders in our devices? ALERT: “they” already can do all of that without even turning on the little “REC” light, although government investigative types need a warrant to do that right now. Hackers never ask for permission.
It is a “brave new world,” and it is scary out there. Many may say, “our government needs this kind of information to keep us safe from terrorists.” I would argue Benjamin Franklin got it right, suggesting “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty or Safety.”
Be warned and be aware.

Service Director
8 年He did it again! Mike always has a way of presenting topics in a easy way to understand. After reflecting on what he's saying, I have always come to the conclusion that he's right. I have been fortunate to run into Mike from time to time and he has always taken time to be personable and caring. I have enjoyed listening to what he has been doing lately and what he will be up to next. I wish he would write a book about his journey in what we call life. Thanks Mike for taking the time to share your knowledge with all of us.

8 年I used to work in this area and I am in full agreement with you. Everything you say, everything you do, everything you send via email, fax is collected. If it were a perfect world it would be collated much like the casino's perfected. That means the 6th degree of separation is in total effect, you and everyone you know, they know are connected in this matrix. Anything and everything can be researched the enemy is within and its us.
