Sprint Reviews Done Right: A Masterclass in Agile Excellence
Anna Lavrova ????
Organisational Coach | Agile Consulting & Transformation, Project Management
Ladies and gentlemen, fasten your seatbelts because today we're diving headfirst into the high-octane world of Agile with a focus on sprint reviews. If you're in the business of delivering value and innovation faster than a Tesla on Ludicrous mode, then sprint reviews are your pit stop for greatness.
(Hey Anna, please do not make controversial references, would you?)
But on a more serious note, I am writing this article amidst not A Friday, but the Friday when I am attending sprint reviews from dusk till dawn (or the other way around) and one of my coaching clients today heavily needed a reference. So what do I do when I am asked? I provide!
So yes, fasten the seatbelts and let's see how a sprint review is supposed to be.
Agenda Item 1: Kick-Off With Purpose
Let's rev up the engines and start with a bang. Every perfect sprint review begins with a clear purpose. Define what you aim to achieve during this review. It could be showcasing a new feature, getting feedback on a product increment, or even discussing potential pivots. Whatever it is, ensure your agenda is laser-focused.
And this is when the PO shares what was the sprint goal and whether the team achieved it or not.
Agenda Item 2: A Dynamic Demo
Gentlemen and gentlewomen, start your engines. It's demo time! Showcase the work accomplished during the sprint. Make it interactive, make it engaging, but above all, make it real. Your demo should leave your audience nodding their heads in appreciation or challenging your assumptions. Either way, it's an opportunity for actionable feedback.
Agenda Item 3: The Feedback Thunderdome
Now, folks, it's time for the main event—the Feedback Thunderdome. Open the floor for constructive criticism, praises, and perhaps a few curveballs. Stakeholders, product owners, and team members should participate actively. The rule here: leave your ego at the door, and bring your insights and suggestions to the table.

Agenda Item 4: Celebrate Wins and Learn from Losses
After the demo and the Feedback Thunderdome, it's time to celebrate the wins. Acknowledge the hard work, appreciate the team's dedication, and pop that metaphorical champagne. But don't skip the crucial step of learning from losses or areas that need improvement. What can you do better next time? How can you optimize your processes?
Show stakeholders the statistics, the charts and all the glorious data you have.
And ask for help if any impediment is still not resolved.
Agenda Item 5: Sprint Review Retrospective
Let's wrap up this perfect sprint review with a quick retrospective. Reflect on the sprint review itself. What worked well? What didn't? How can you enhance the next one? It's all about continuous improvement.
Agenda Item 6: Setting Clear Action Items
As we rev down, don't forget to set clear action items. Who's responsible for what, and by when? Keep the momentum going by ensuring everyone knows their next steps.
In conclusion, my fellow Agile aficionados, a perfect sprint review isn't just about checking off boxes; it's a dynamic and evolving process. It's about pushing boundaries, embracing feedback, and using it as fuel for your Agile journey.
Remember, agility is not a destination; it's a mindset, a culture, and a way of life. So, whether you're in the driver's seat or a co-pilot on this Agile adventure, the perfect sprint review is your roadmap to success.
Rev up those engines, embrace the unknown, and may your Agile journey be as exhilarating as a ride on the Autobahn.
Stay Agile, stay hungry, and stay ahead.
