Spring in Summer!
It’s finally happened!
After a long wait since its introduction in 2006 (after first being announced in 2005 at #JavaPolis), I’m FINALLY able to attend #SpringOne!
This has been years in the making…but I’ll be there! I’ll be taking vacation to enjoy this rare summer treat! I have A LOT to say on this, so…strap in!
For 17 years, #SpringOne has been one of the premier DEVELOPER-FOCUSED vendor conferences. It’s found a way to blend three key areas that developers care about:
From a learning perspective, #SpringOne continues to bring forward some of the brightest technical minds to educate the #Java ecosystem on using the #springframework by any Java application for enterprise development. But, over the years, the conference as evolved to expand the learning experience touching on areas like #cloudnative, #microservices, scaling #cloud services, as so much more.
Sharing has also been a pivotal pillar in #SpringOne success. Fundamentally, to enrich the learning experience requires the facility to share real-world uses cases and best practices in-person.
And of course…collaborating. How does a technology improve? By offering developers the opportunity to join in to participate and share ideas on future technology evolution.

Those three pillars give #SpringOne the backbone I’ve been chomping at the bit to experience. And now that time is here.
We live in interesting times, where for some reason the face-to-face experience is being de-emphasized. And I can’t think of a greater crisis we’re facing in tech. For sure, there are plenty of online facilities that emulate the “Learn. Share. Collaborate.” experience. But, there’s a disconnect by only living in that digital world...a disconnect that creates greater distance rather than closer harmony.
As humans, we seek personal contact…contact that help us find places to connect, communicate and collaborate in areas we seek purpose. And #SpringOne affords developers a unique experience to do just that. It’s not just ROI that’s important, as in “Return on Investment”. It’s also about ROI, as in “Return on Inclusion” and "Return on Involvement".
I tip my cap to leadership at VMware and VMware Tanzu Labs who fundamentally understand that the value of in-person engagement helps lead to better technical decisions. That’s something priceless, which should be celebrated and acknowledged.
For me personally, it goes beyond “Learn. Share. Collaborate.” As a #Java community leader…scratch that…Java community sherpa, it’s important to understand how community activities, programs and channels are differentiated in our vast tech ecosystem. The only way we as community sherpas can improve in helping others reach their summit is through greater face-to-face participation.
So, at #SpringOne I’m using this opportunity to better myself so I can evolve my community skills to better serve the developer ecosystem I represent. For me, there’s nothing more rewarding than investing in ones own self-improvement.
Lastly, considering that vast size of the #Java ecosystem, it’s humbling to see how much of that community is represented at #SpringOne. From #JavaUserGroup leaders, #JavaChampions, and globally recognized Java luminaries, SpringOne offers a unique opportunity to connect with all of them including Josh Long , Mark Heckler , Nate Schutta , Corneil du Plessis , Jonatan Ivanov , Oleg ?elajev , DaShaun C. , Oliver Drotbohm , Dan Vega , Glenn Renfro , Rory Preddy?? , and Asir V Selvasingh . I hope to meet many of these amazing people during my first foray into this year’s event.
Over the coming days, I’ll highlight many of the things I’m looking forward to at #SpringOne. I hope you’ll follow along. Even better, I hope you can join me!
