Spring Forward with New Marketing Trends

Spring Forward with New Marketing Trends

We once had a client many years ago when Facebook Pages was a new thing and everyone was trying to build up their following. Meta offered bonuses for gaining certain sizes of audiences and ads were just becoming a thing and easy to set in motion. There was also a trend emerging which, to some extent, still exists today and that was to buy followers.?

Companies were popping up in ads all over Facebook that we could buy followers for our page. Our position on this was clear: we do not recommend buying followers (or engagement or reviews). Mostly because it’s creating a false impression which is something we agreed was misleading and therefore unethical, but also because these companies are using practices that go against most social media platforms’ community standard.

Our client, who had asked us our opinion about this new trend, apparently ignored our advice and purchased 30,000 followers for his Facebook page.

A few months later, he was struggling to get book publishers interested in his book, even though he had a large following on social media. Their tools could see that even though his audience was large, it didn’t seem to be engaging with his content. He asked us to take a deep dive to determine how to get his engagement up.

We took a look at his audience demographics and overlapped that with the demographics of the folks who were engaging with his content and we found that 30,000 people who liked his page were located in Egypt, but that none of those people (no one) from Egypt were engaging with his content. If you do the math, you’ll realize that 30,000 people who don’t interact with your content can definitely skew your engagement rate and there’s not much we can do to make fake followers engage.

We’d love to hear your story!
