Spring Cleaning Training Courses?

Keeping up to date on the topics you train or teach is so important.

How do you keep up to date and refresh your coverage in legal or technical subjects

1.????? Breaking News slots on every course with the latest legal case, media commentary or political announcements in parliament

2.????? Subscribing free to e mail newsletters from bodies such as ACAS, Advertising Standards Authority, the Equality Commission or the Information Commissioner.

3.????? House of Commons Library Research Briefings -my admiration for these hard diligent workers knows no bounds

4.????? Inviting participants to bring along something they have come across in the media or public domain – you might be surprised what you have missed as a trainer!

5.????? Time for reflection – I buy two newspaper a day (centre left/centre right) and this daily diet helps me with my own judgements and interpretations

6.????? Volunteering -not for everyone I know but my voluntary advocacy work on employment rights, equalities, trading standards and welfare benefits helps me walk the “real talk” between theory and practice!

What’s changing in your world of training?

Here are three examples from my work that come to mind:-

1.????? Equality Laws

Definitions and the scope of the? Nine Protected Characteristics in the Equality Act 2010 are changing all the time in the light of caselaw, legislation and societal changes. Topics embracing neurodiversity and the menopause are increasingly featuring in employment tribunals claims. The new Worker Protection Act 2024 (WPA) which places a Preventative Duty on Sexual Harassment on employers requires robust risk assessments which are similar to Equality Impacts Assessments(EIA’s). Equal Pay and the Gender Pay Reporting Duty may soon be extended to embrace disability and race bias in pay schemes. Some employers are ahead of the game already. These pioneers are applying transferable learning and action points from Gender Pay Schemes to cover the other Protected Characteristics

2.????? UK GDPR Data Protection and Privacy Electronic Communication Regulations (PECR)

Technological changes and impending new UK laws means that these course subjects are ever changing and it's important to reflect the latest breaking news with informed predictions about what's next on the horizon.

This certainly includes the Data Use and Access Bill which will impact both on PECR and the UK GDPR Data Protection Act.?

The draft 2024/2025 legislation already covers:-?

  • New Digital Verification Services. Helping with things like moving house, pre-employment checks, and buying age restricted goods and services
  • Smart Data schemes, which is about the secure sharing of a customer’s data upon their request, with authorised third-party providers
  • Stronger information standards for IT suppliers in the health and social care system.
  • Broader definitions of consent for areas of scientific research, allowing legitimate? researchers in commercial settings to make equal use of the UK data regime.
  • Modernising and strengthening the ICO. It will be transformed into a more modern regulatory structure, with a CEO, board and chair.

?3.????? New Employment Rights Bill

The biggest upgrade in employment rights for a generation and it covers: -

  • Day One Rights
  • Bereavement, Paternity and Unpaid Parental Leave
  • Fire and Rehire
  • Unfair Dismissal
  • Trade Union Rights
  • Zero Hours Contracts

?

And one thing can lead to another!

One subject review -certainly, in any of those above – can lead you into the others with consequent changes and impacts.

How do you keep up to date?
