Spring Cleaning: Don't forget your browser.

Spring Cleaning: Don't forget your browser.

Spring is a time of warming weather, nature’s reawakening, and deep cleaning sprees.

Cleaning out the ‘junk” that’s collected in our garage or removing the “gunk” that’s built up on our windows to the world isn’t inherently enjoyable. However, the space and light we’ve created when these tasks are done makes our personal lives more productive and enjoyable.

If you think about it, setting aside time to “spring clean” our computer’s browser isn’t that different. Once we’ve cleared out the “junk” (that cluttered mess of bookmarks, passwords, and obsolete links) and removed the “gunk” (the cache that is stuffed to overflowing), our professional lives will be more productive and enjoyable, too.

Below are five things you can do now to clean up your browser and tune up your computer’s performance:

  1. Update your browser with the latest version. Browser updates often include bug fixes, security patches, and performance improvements, so it's important to keep your browser updated to stay safe and secure online.
  2. Clear your cache, cookies, and browsing history. This helps remove temporary files and data stored by websites, which can improve performance and protect your privacy. Most browsers allow you to do this through the settings or preferences menu.
  3. Revisit your favorites/bookmarks. Delete any outdated or unused favorites. Organize remaining bookmarks into folders based on categories such as "Work," "Personal," "Reference," etc. This makes it easier to find and access saved websites.
  4. Dig into your browser's password manager. Delete any saved passwords for websites you no longer use or trust. Consider using a dedicated password manager for improved security and convenience.
  5. Take the time to review and customize your browser's settings. ?This may include adjusting privacy settings, default search engine, homepage, and download location. Ensure that security features like pop-up blockers and phishing protection are enabled.

These simple steps will help you effectively spring clean your web browser and optimize your browsing experience for improved performance, security, and productivity all year long—and maybe even give you a little more time to enjoy the more beautiful things of springtime.
