With spring arriving we have responded to several net zero updates and more
Changeworks
Scotland’s leading environmental charity delivering solutions for positive low carbon living.
We had a brilliant start to April when we were shortlisted for, not one, but two Star Awards. One for ‘brand development’ with the Lane - a Certified B Corp Agency, and the other for ‘design’. A big thank you to everyone who has been involved in this work.
We were also delighted to welcome two new senior members to the Changeworks team. Ian Cochran has joined as our new Head of Consultancy, and Jill Craig joins as our new Head of Building Contracts. Find out more about their experience and what they had to say about joining the team below:
This month saw some confusion on new legislation surrounding wood burning stoves. We can confirm that whilst there is a ban, it only applies to homes built after 1 April 2024. It has no impact on existing properties. We’ve written an explainer article detailing what the wood burning stove ban means for householders.
A significant announcement this month was the Scottish Government scrapping the 2030 net zero target. You can read our full response on our website.

We’re proud to be one of the many signatories of an open letter urging Cabinet Secretary, Màiri McAllan MSP, and the Scottish Government to commit to introducing a clear, fair, and robust Heat in Buildings Bill this autumn, ensuring there are no delays to this important programme of government policy. Read our response to the Bill’s consultation here:
Our colleague Roddy Hamilton attended the Energy Systems Catapult Innovating to Net Zero conference this month. It was a great opportunity to learn more about the work Catapult is doing and attend the launch of their new report Innovating to Net Zero 2024. This aims to give people, businesses, and the UK government confidence to make investment and innovation decisions, and to take action that moves us closer to meeting our Net Zero targets.
Our Chief Executive Josiah Lockhart had a whirlwind week in Scottish environmental politics. Finally, we were honoured to achieve an Investors in People platinum accreditation! Investors in People accreditations are a global benchmark for having a workplace culture that engages and supports colleagues. Only 7% of organisations manage to get this accreditation so it’s a significant milestone. A big thank you to all our colleagues who have been involved in this process.
