Spring 2023 Internship Experience at Frontier Airlines

I am feeling grateful for the opportunity to have worked with Frontier Airlines , one of the America’s biggest Ultra Low-Cost Carrier and America’s Greenest Airline.

During my internship period, I had the opportunity to work on my first project to automate block review performance from Excel to Power BI for which, I used SQL queries for data extraction, performed data modeling, calculated new columns for analysis using advanced DAX functions, and built visualizations. This project honed my analytical and visualization skills and resulted in increased efficiency and time saving from 180 minutes to 15 minutes, reducing the need for manual intervention, making it more interactive for the leadership team to review performance.

In my another project, I developed a framework using Python to analyze historical data. This involved consolidating multiple flights data files from the past 3-5 years, consisting of millions of rows, which allowed me to examine monthly or seasonal trends for each station with respect to metrics such as Taxi Out, Taxi In times. The framework proved invaluable in evaluating historical timings to an excel sheet within 1-2 minutes, which helps in improving future flight block timings predictions and create more efficient operations to achieve monthly block targets. This project provided me with experience in data analysis, through data integration, EDA, and statistical analysis.

I was also involved in day-to-day tasks that includes analyzing flight delay reasons, flights performance issues, evaluate correlations by conducting data analysis using SQL, Excel, Python, Power BI, Visual Studio Code and Databricks, to present data insights to senior management which can help them further in enhancing decision-making. For developing advanced SQL queries, I joined data from multiple tables streamlining the daily or weekly data retrieval process for analysis. For areas for improvement, I proposed ideas through presentation to senior management.

Additionally, I was involved in daily meetings with members of the network planning and scheduling team, as well as senior managers and directors, which provided me with a better understanding of airline network planning, various new terms, and important KPIs in the airline industry.?

While completing my internship projects, I also had the opportunity to learn new platforms, such as Databricks and Visual Studio Code. This experience not only helped me to expand my skill set but also challenged me to become proficient in these tools to accomplish my project goals.

As a professional who is always eager to learn and grow, I was keen to gain a deeper understanding of how other departments function in the industry and I was fortunate enough to interact with various other departments, such as marketing, treasury, pricing and revenue, which allowed me to gain new perspectives and insights into their work. Additionally, I had the opportunity to explore the airport hangar, witness the process of transferring baggage from the terminal to the aircraft and having always been curious about the inside of the cockpit, I was thrilled to finally be able to experience it firsthand.

To summarize, my internship has been an exhilarating opportunity which has challenged me, enriched my learning experience, equipped me with in-depth data analysis and modeling skills, as well as core competencies like problem-solving through brainstorming, teamwork, and collaboration.
