One of my clients has the core value of spreading joy. In that spirit, here are five ways to spread joy for the rest of 2023.
- The 10 second complement. When interacting with a stranger, go beyond the simple please, thank you and you’re welcome. This works quite well when speaking to person ringing you up at the store. Complement them on something unexpected (i.e., I like that necklace; that’s a great color on you; where did you get that XXXXX, I really like it). Don’t get too personal, but their reaction will bring joy to both people.
- The unexpected gesture. Holding the door is nice, letting someone cut ahead of you is even better. An unexpected, “please, go ahead of me” is usually accompanied by a smile and a thank you, particularly if the person is in a rush. Want to take it a step further? Unexpectedly paying for something small for the person behind will provide immediate joy for both people involved.
- Sharing what you “like”. When scrolling through social feeds, give back more than a like or the message suggested by the social platform. Type in a few positive words or thoughts. Or, find an emoji that’s unique to the conversation. It makes both parties feel the scrolling is more than a mindless exercise and might even spark a more substantive interaction. (start with this article)
- Asking a stranger’s opinion on something simple. For example, when at the grocery store, ask the person how they like something in their cart or even how they prepare it. We don’t have to discuss and solve the world’s problems in every interaction.
- Making a list and crossing things off. Believe it or not, completing a physical list creates a sense of accomplishment. Even if you do something not on the list, write it down and cross it off. It may feel silly, but at the end of the day, completing the tasks will result in a little joy of your own. ?
I’d love to hear your thoughts about other things we can do to become more present with each other every day.
