Spread Kindness, Spark Success!

This past weekend I had the honor of speaking at the Trusted Advisor Summit in Chicago, hosted by my wonderful book publisher, the ever-dynamic Henry DeVries from Indie Books International . Among the wealth of wisdom shared by brilliant authors and speakers, one theme resonated deeply: kindness.

This theme echoed powerfully at a Northern Illinois University Foundation social event I recently attended. The school’s president and others sincerely thanked distinguished donors like myself for supporting the university and its students. It was a student speaker, though, who brought a tear to my eye. She shared her story and expressed heartfelt gratitude to those who provided scholarships and emotional support on her journey, enabling her to earn her degree and now pursue her passion in law.

My wife Jennifer, a fantastic Kindergarten teacher, recently mentioned she was going to focus even more on being kind—not that she isn’t already one of the kindest people you'll ever meet. Her comment, coupled with what I observed at the Summit and the NIU event, made me reflect on what kindness truly means—at least to me. The simple acts we take can change lives and make our world a better place.

It’s easy to overlook the profound impact of kindness in today's fast-paced professional environment. Amidst deadlines, targets, and the relentless pursuit of success, we often forget that the true measure of greatness lies not just in our achievements but in how we treat others along the way. Embracing kindness and encouraging those around us is not merely a nice gesture; it’s a transformative practice that can change lives and careers.

The Ripple Effect of Kindness

Kindness is a powerful force that has a ripple effect far beyond the initial act. A simple word of encouragement, a thoughtful gesture, or a moment of genuine empathy can uplift someone's spirit and inspire them to reach new heights. This can translate into increased morale, improved teamwork, and a more positive workplace culture. When people feel valued and supported, they are more likely to contribute their best efforts, fostering an environment of mutual respect and collaboration. And who knows? Your kind words today might just save you from being that person everyone avoids.

Building Stronger Connections

Encouraging others strengthens relationships and builds trust. Whether it's a colleague struggling with a challenging project, a team member doubting their abilities, or a family member needing some friendly guidance, your support can make a difference. By offering a helping hand or a few words of motivation, you show that you care about their well-being and success. These small acts of kindness create deeper connections and a sense of community, making the workplace a more fulfilling and cohesive space. Think of it as the ultimate networking strategy, minus the awkward small talk.

The Joy of Giving

There is an inherent joy in being kind and encouraging, and doing so without expecting anything in return! That’s partly why set up a scholarship fund at NIU and why our firm established a Proactive Day of Service, where we shut down for the day to volunteer and help others. We experience a sense of fulfillment and purpose when we lift others up. As I mentioned in prior articles, my purpose is to make a positive difference in the lives of others. This joy is contagious, spreading positivity and creating a cycle of encouragement. In turn, those who benefit from our kindness are more likely to pay it forward, creating a culture where support and goodwill are the norms rather than the exceptions. It’s like a game of kindness tag, but without the running.

Fostering a Culture of Kindness

Creating a culture of kindness starts with leadership but extends to every individual within an organization. Leaders who prioritize empathy and encouragement set the tone for the entire team. They lead by example, demonstrating that kindness is integral to success. At the same time, every team member has the power to contribute to this culture. It doesn’t mean you can’t hold others accountable, but how you do it matters. By being attentive, offering praise, and providing constructive feedback with compassion, we can all play a part in fostering an environment where everyone feels appreciated and motivated. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to work in a place where high-fives and positive vibes are the norms?

Transforming Lives and Careers

Kindness has the power to transform lives and careers in unexpected ways. Encouraging others not only helps them grow but also enhances your own personal and professional development. It builds your reputation as a supportive and trustworthy individual, opens doors to new opportunities, and enriches your life with meaningful relationships. The return on investment for kindness is immeasurable, creating a legacy of positive impact that endures long after the initial act. Plus, it’s scientifically proven that being nice is way more fun than being a jerk.

Being kind and encouraging others is a telling way to make a lasting difference. Professionally, it enhances teamwork, fosters innovation, and builds stronger, more resilient organizations. So, let's commit to a higher standard of kindness, encourage those around us, and watch as our collective success unfolds. Remember, in the grand scheme of things, it's not just what we achieve that matters, but how we uplift others along the way. And if nothing else, it’ll make those Monday mornings more bearable.

What will you do today that is kind?
