Spray Foam Insulation

Spray Foam Insulation

Unfortunately my petition that the UK Government should commission research re applying spray foam insulation in buildings has been rejected.

Copies of my petition and the rejection are below.

Both my parents worked for FPRL (Forest Products Research Laboratory) which was merged into BRE (Building Research Establishment). I was brought up to be open minded and base conclusions on research. Of course research can be expensive and does not always pay dividends. There are dangers when commercially driven research is undertaken, that it is not impartial.

For years the UK Government has shied away from funding research. Politicians are apt to make gut decisions that may be unfounded.

So this rejection is unfortunate, but unsurprising.

Sam Piplica wrote about what RICS are doing about spray foam insulation on myRICS community last Friday. There may be further news today. I welcome these initiatives, but they would be better grounded on the basis of research.

Meanwhile unfortunately our Government welcome manufacturers of spray foam insulation and its the little old ladies etc who will suffer!

Dear Laurence Arthur John Bletchly,

Sorry, we can’t accept your petition – “Commission research re applying spray foam insulation in buildings.”.

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action. We understand that you are concerned about spray foam insulation, but we're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government to commission research into. You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.

UK Government and Parliament

Commission research re applying spray foam insulation in buildings.

There is much concern about energy costs and the implications of applying spray foam insulation in buildings as this House of Commons Library note explains

More details

I do not consider it appropriate for little old ladies etc to be bounced into installing spray foam insulation in their homes by persuasive salesman spinning ? a story and then facing a bill to remove it as and when they learn more.

This photo just taken - same property as photo per this article - open cell spray foam - client messaged me this morning saying "This foam only installed 2020 just before we moved in so no rafters rott but slightly damp few of them now all gone ." He was going to use ice blast for removal. Thanks Arthur?
