A Spouse's view on Twitter's decision to 'work from home forever'

This week, Twitter was all over the news for being one of the first companies to let employees 'work from home forever' if they chose to. This has been hailed as a progressive and potentially trend-setting move for other companies to follow. My wife is the Director for Marketing in Asia-Pacific for Twitter in Singapore.
I thought I would put a list together to bring out the advantages for me if she decided to WFH forever.
- I would continue to see her embrace the 'Pyjama choice' syndrome each morning where she looks at her calendar and decides how 'dressy the pyjama need to be'. Fashion or comfort? Who says you have to choose?
- I would continue to hear her in full work mode on phone calls and meetings. It's something that is unexpected, hilarious and downright strange. My wife apparently is the "It's been challenging to seek cross-functional alignment these days" kind-of-a-person and I think it's time to schedule mandatory 'Dilbert reading'.
- The entire world is turned upside down. Record unemployment, imminent global recession, massive government bailouts, but nothing is MORE severe than Slack going down for a few hours. I can watch her turn visibly disturbed and reassess her life choices.
- I get to experience the pinnacle of her love and gratitude when I used a VPN to watch season 12 of Masterchef Australia during lunchtime. It's also grim to know that nothing I've done before or after will come even remotely close to making her THAT happy.
- I get to see her worry about her team and in turn, you get to see her team rallying around each other and send gifts and knick-knacks back and forth valiantly keeping Grab delivery profitable in these turbulent times. #supportlocalbusiness
- I experience the joys of 'syncing up our calendars' for 15 mins of coffee time in the afternoon and debate for 12 minutes if it's a biscuit kind of a day or have we worked hard enough to deserve a coconut cake.
- I will continue to see her miss her close friends at work. It's very cute to see 'social tea time' where the vagaries of art, culture, human condition and suffering are all thrown out for some premium good ol' fashioned gossip. They should make an app for that .
- I love having her at home so I can ask life-changing questions like - 'Honey, have you seen my Thunderbolt to USB connector?' or 'Does the dog take a pro-biotic or an anti-tick?' I am sure she finds those questions gratifying especially because it's seconds before she is about to jump on a call.
- I love watching her have 'Friday drinks' with people from around the world, wearing silly headgear for 'strictly team-building purposes' and wondering if she is the founder/CEO of the nerd tribe and I will just be a card-carrying member.
- In all honesty, though, I am to suffer from constant admiration on how someone can manage all the things she does at work, care for everyone so deeply, buy incredibly thoughtful gifts for colleagues, friends and family and still manage to create magic at dinner via #lockdowncooking. I don't say it enough, but she is the shelter that Lola and I come to for absolutely anything in our lives.
Ok, the ball's in your court Disha. What are you going to do from 2021?

4 年Whoa Siddarth Das and Disha Goenka Das - much love there and clearly, clearly bucking the trend of people killing each other during weeks and months of lockdown (was that just me?!) - keep it light and may you (and all of us) always look on the bright side of life! Super stuff - perfect for the Friday! Thank you
